well told story directed by the Coen's March 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i've seen a few of the Coen Brothers movies, and didn't really like most of them.i just thought they were too weird.but this one's different.it seems more based in reality.these characters could exist and their actions are plausible.i also thought the characters were well defined within the confines of the movie.this is a dark movie, for sure.the story is set in 1980,and is more or less told from the point of view of the local sheriff and his perspective on the changing times and the new breed of criminal.this is a crime drama, but it's also a western of sorts.it's violent, but not as much as many other movies.this is a character and dialogue driven movie.i thought it was well done.it's not an action packed movie.in fact,it may seem a bit slow at times but the story is told well enough, and the characters are interesting and engaging enough that it never becomes boring.in fact,i found it very compelling.i liked everything about this movie. No country for Old Men is a 5/5
Only Four Statues?!? March 17, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This film is great! I don't know what to say there is too much to praise.
Great acting! The antagonist, played by Javier Bardem, is just downright sinister if you ask me. His portrayal of a hitman named Chigurh hired to reclaim 2 million dollars that was "found" by Llwelynd Moss (Brolin), a Vietnam vet, at the scene of a drug deal gone wrong is nothing short of awesome. Essentially a chase movie set in West Texas that focuses on man's primal drives and instincts. Love the non-Hollywood ending: good guy dies/ bad guy lives. Philosophical allusion at films conclusion provides a certain measure of intellectual depth to a monster of a thriller.
Yes the Coens are Back March 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When the Coen's are on there are none better. I wait with baited breath every time something new from them comes out, I know I will either be bitterly dissapointed (Lavender Hill Mob, O Brother Where Art Thou), or will soon be witnessing another soon to be personal favorite (Fargo, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Blood Simple). This is another great one from the Coen's. While this could be described as just a violent thriller, it is done with such great pacing and acting that it makes it a great one. The real star of course is the purely evil character played by Javier Bardem, who is so calm and nice before he kills you and who has his own warped sense of principles. "I have to kill you I promised your husband". If you see the movie you will know how warped that statement is, but you see his twisted logic. Other times he let's fate decide by a coin flip. I would not put this ahead of Fargo (their movie that should have won the Oscar) but it is very chilling and very good.
