5 out of 5 stars Fabulous fiction - for those craving a marvellous story   September 29, 2008
Recipe for a perfect afternoon: a tall glass of real iced tea, phones off, a tub filled with your favourite scented bubbles, no kidlets or other distractions, and this jewel of a book. I wept at the end - simply because it ended! Luxuriate in the pages of a novel in which this fine storyteller whisks you away into another world where you, too, will fall in love with an elephant.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting book   September 21, 2008
This book is a gem. It persists to stay in my mind and has been a true eye-opener into the life of the circus workers. From a vet's point of view as well as one who depends on the circus to survive- mind blowing.

I can usually tell how much I enjoyed a book by how much of it stays in my mind days after. This book is haunting my thoughts.

It will be a long while until I find another story such as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Come to Grips with the Past   September 19, 2008
This novel is a must read for anyone who wants to recapture the essence of their past life. In this fictional account of Jacob Jankowski's life, Gruen focuses on one eventful summer's fling with the circus that describe the creative possibilities that await humankind on their ordinary journey through time. The story covers how Jacob happened to fall in with the circus crowd at the height of the Great Depression, the opportunities life on the midway gave him to meet and form personal relationships, and the eventual impetus he had to move on after the Big Top folded. His story is told from a perspective of a ninety-three year old nursing-home geriatric who wants to return to those moments of youthful exuberance and opportunity. The passion for working with animals is still there and an aging Jacob still desires to escape his present confinement to revisit his first love. Mixed in with the pleasant memories are a lot of heartaches and frustrations that serve to create a balanced view of nostalgia. Loving something or someone comes with a huge price: how to reconnect with it after you have lost it somewhere in the distant past. Marvellous story worth reading by all who have a tender connection with the past.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.   July 1, 2008

When I picked this up off the shelf, I knew 3 things about it.
1. It involved a circus and that this seemed like an interesting setting for a story.
2. That I'd heard it was amazing.
3. That it was half price. (My city has a half price bookstore, where every book in it is marked this way)

From reading it, I learned
1. That the book lived up to its reputation as amazing
2. That it would have been worth more than full price
3. That I am excited to read everything Gruen has wriiten.

Highly recommended.
