5 out of 5 stars ONE CUP OF ADVENTURE, ONE OF AWE AND ONE OF PROFOUND HUMANITY   July 13, 2008
I am writing this because Greg Mortenson suggests a review of this book as one way of helping his cause and his cause is world peace - it is the least I can do in light of the supreme sacrifices he and his family are making.

This is a remarkable story that is so full of adventure, plot twists, political intrigue, romance and suspense that it could practically write itself. Yet the writing is exquisite in that it takes us through so much with ease, clarity and emotion. You are drawn into the story on the first page and you are with Greg, not reading about him. I feel like I have traveled with him and know the terrain of his experiences. Before I started the book I thought I would just skim it to get the essence of the story but something interesting happens on every page and you don't want to miss one word.

One cup of adventure takes you through mountains, enemy territories, Greg's own poverty and sacrifices, and the rough terrains of the political realities. One cup of awe leaves you dumbstruck by the majestic beauty of the landscapes and the sheer force and strength of Greg, his family and his team of courageous souls. And one cup of profound humanity leaves you thankful and full of hope for the future of humankind.

When I first started reading about Greg Mortenson and his experience in Pakistan my first thought was why is he dedicating his life to this country across the world rather then his own? The more I read the book the more I came to realize that when he was helping educate girls in Pakistan he actually was helping his own country in more ways then can possibly be studied.

I have always believed that literacy and education can change the world for the better if done in a manner to benefit the people. On the other hand education done for the entrapment of the people like the Wahhabi madrassas are instituting can severely harm the people.

The power of books and education is too strong to ignore and "Three Cups of Tea" is a perfect example of this fact.

"Three Cups of Tea" also brings to light the importance of understanding the countries culture. The traditions of these ancient cultures need to be understood and respected to be able to educate the people. We are truly blind if we think the world wants to be educated in an American way that ignores the peoples' traditions.

What a wonderful book! What a great mission for one person in paying back to kindness rendered to him by one community - to reach out with schools instead of weapons and to involve the whole communities in the building of schools so that all children will have the opportunity to learn.

This book should be read by as many people as possible and then perhaps more would realise that we are all connected no matter what race, religion, country, etc. We really are ONE. If more people did like Greg Mortenson then we wouldn't have to fear anymore!
