Amazon.com Audiobook Review "It's a pretty grim world when I can't even feel superior to a toddler." Welcome to the curious mind of David Sedaris, where dogs outrank children, guitars have breasts, and French toddlers unmask the inadequacies of the American male. Sedaris inhabits this world as a misanthrope chronicling all things petty and small. In IMe Talk Pretty One Day/I Sedaris is as determined as ever to be nobody's hero--he never triumphs, he never conquers--and somehow, with each failure, he inadvertently becomes everybody's favorite underdog. The world's most eloquent malcontent, Sedaris has turned self-deprecation into a celebrated art form--one that is perhaps best experienced in audio. "Go Carolina," his account of "the first battle of my war against the letter Is/I" is particularly poignant. Unable to disguise the lisp that has become his trademark, Sedaris highlights (to hilarious extent) the frustration of reading "childish Is/I-laden texts recounting the adventures of seals or settlers named Sassy or Samuel." Including 23 of the book version's 28 stories, two live performances complete with involuntary laughter, and an uncannily accurate Billie Holiday impersonation, the audio is more than a companion to the text; it stands alone as a performance piece--only without the sock monkeys. (Running time: 5 hours, 4 cassettes) I--Daphne Durham/I

Great book November 28, 2007 James Monroe (Sterling) This is not a novel, nor is it anything close, but thank God for David Sedaris and his tell-it-like-it is humour. Known by just about everyone now from his NPR interviews and stand-up routines, he's famous because he's so darn funny. ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY is by far the most entertaining book of this or any other century and you WILL laugh out loud, even in public. This short book ranks up there with "Naked" McCrae's "Katzenjammer," and the novel "Confederacy of Dunces." I highly recommend it to anyone who like to laugh.
Cracked me up November 1, 2007 No name given 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
This book, along with McCrae's "Katzenjammer" really cracked me up. While the two have nothing subject-wise in common, they're both funny. Sedaris is a master storyteller and knows just the thing to say to make you go, "Ah ha!" I've given multiple copies of the book to everyone I know.
Hilarious!! April 17, 2007 Sedaris Fan My first attempts at reading David Sedaris's stories did not go well. I didn't find the stories funny, and found it difficult to find the desire to pick up the book and read it. It wasn't until I listened to the Audiobooks that I found the humour. Narrated by the author and his sister Amy, the stories take on a new life, and the humour is undeniable. When returning to the books, I then had his voice and delivery in my mind as I read, and I finally saw all of the good things that I had been hearing about this author. For those who are inclined to give a negative review after reading his book, I urge you to seek out the audiobooks first, and listen to the stories as the author had intended them. There is a reason that he sells out book reading tours.
The funniest book ever written September 26, 2006 Seabold (Montreal) 20 out of 26 found this review helpful
ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY is the most enjoyable read I have had so far this year. Anyone who has read NAKED will appreciate the continuing adventures of David Sedaris. There is no other writer who can tell a story like this man. (No, I'm not one of his relatives). ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY is comprised of various essays about family, relationships, New York, France, pets and the most interesting situations that happen in the life of this most talented writer. This book will make you laugh out loud, particularly if you have ever thought of yourself or your family as eccentric. I thank David Sedaris for speaking out in such an honest way about his life for our reading pleasure. David Sedaris hits the mark with this collection of essays on his eccentric childhood and even more eccentric adult life. He is openly gay and his style could be offensive to some people -- he is very up-front about sex, swearing, drug use and so on -- but he doesn't set out to shock. These are simply the facts of his life and he is happy to share them with you. The stories about his drug use are very matter-of-fact about the real ups and downs of drug addiction. He admits all of his own faults and almost dares you to disagree with his conclusions about his uselessness....and does it in prose so lyrical, so sweetly amusing, that you feel the world would indeed be a worse place without his skewed perspective. Anyone who can read this book without howls of laughter is devoid of a sense of humor. Highly recommended -- even if you are, as I am, a dyed-in-the-wool conservative. Can't wait for the next book! Please try the wild, bright, and unorthodox novel, KATZENJAMMER by Jackson McCrae, and NAKED by Mr. Sedaris. br / br /
Plain hilarious March 18, 2006 Philip (Montana) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Plain hilarious July 18, 2005 brThis is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. The odd characters made it all the more funny. Being the first Sedaris book I have read, I am up and ready for more of his stories. He is a witty and humorous writer. The Usurper and Other Stories, Mind your language,Running with Scissors are fine and hilarious books to read.
