From Amazon.com Author and physician Brian Weiss first delved into the realm of past-life therapy in his highly successful and controversial book IMany Lives, Many Masters/I. Although he has since developed a huge following in the field of "regression therapy" (in which clients are hypnotized in order to access previous lifetimes), Weiss has focused this latest book on the here and now. "Past lives are still a significant concept and value for me, but understanding and expressing love, joy, and inner peace in my everyday life have become more significant," Weiss explains.p Weiss, who is now an internationally sought-after lecturer, uses his teaching voice to address happiness and love in our current lifetimes. This is indeed a "how-to" book, packed with ambitious discussions on why we choose to "come back" to our current lives and the role of fate. He also devotes many chapters to spiritual self-help, showing readers why it's important to let go of anger, develop a loving spiritual family, and cultivate love and compassion. No, these are not new or original concepts. But those who liked the past-life visions and riveting anecdotes in IMany Lives, Many Masters/I will find themselves equally riveted. I--Gail Hudson/I

Universal wisdom, Amazing stories, Practical advice April 21, 2003 Groovy Vegan (California) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The "Masters" are highly evolved souls not in physical form who pass along messages of love, wisdom and universal truth. Psychiatrist Brian Weiss, famous for his books on reincarnation, received these messages through various means including his own meditations and the past-life regressions of his patients. Whether someone is a long-time spiritual seeker or just beginning their spiritual journey, there is so much of value in this book! pIn each chapter, I'm impressed by 3 things: (1) the quote from the masters that opens the chapter, (2) the amazing stories Weiss shares, and (3) the plethora of practical advice. p(1) Each chapter begins with a quote from the masters about 1 to 2 paragraphs long-a lot of wisdom packed into a few words. These messages include the importance of love, forgiveness, patience, meditation and visualization; and information about reincarnation and life in spiritual form. Although these messages corroborate other spiritual and metaphysical books I've read, it's great to have messages on so many topics succinctly boiled down to their essence in one book.p(2) Each chapter contains fascinating stories that reinforce the masters' quote which begins the chapter. The stories come from many sources including Brian Weiss' life, his regression patients and workshop participants, and experiences with talented mediums such as James Van Praagh. The stories are truly amazing, and if the reader believes the author is telling the truth, provide incontrovertible evidence the existence of the soul outside the human body via out of the body-, between life-, and reincarnation experiences. I recognized several stories from Weiss' previous books, but most were new. There were numerous cases of hypnotic regression patients, mediums, and workshop participants accessing information that no one would know except an individual and his or her deceased loved one, plus some spine-tingling "coincidences". p(3) "Messages from the Masters" is far more than wise quotes and cool stories. I'm impressed by the depth and wisdom of the advice. For example, in his chapter on psychics and mediums, Weiss devotes 4 pages discussing 10 rules of thumb for separating real ones from the fakes. Likewise, his chapter on teachers discusses discerning real teachers and gurus from pretenders. I'm impressed that the book doesn't just preach "peace and love" but provides so much practical advice one can use on a day-to-day basis. In addition, Weiss' commentary on the fallacies of modern psychiatry is quite interesting.p(4) Bonuses - Appendix A provides 7 spiritual teachings, each followed by passages from the sacred writings of major religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. Appendix B provides 2 meditations one can read into a tape recorder: a past life meditation and a healing meditation with dolphins. pBottom line: this book is full of wisdom, fascinating stories, and practical advice. I highly recommend it to beginning spiritual seekers, long-term spiritual seekers, and skeptics alike.

The unknown has always fascinated me.When i first read the book 'Only love is real'by Brian Weiss i was appalled at how much i could relate to his work, its made me believe even more strongly in past life regression and would someday love to be hypnotized by him.
Same ole messages from the masters March 4, 2003 LF (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have read books on the afterlife but I'm always ready to try another if it has something new in it. My favorite books on the subject are Michael Newton's Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls. I tried this one because of its title Messages from the Masters, thinking maybe the book had a lot of information given directly by higher beings in Heaven.pFrom the beginning I was disappointed. It seemed like there was a lot of filler and not much new substance. The messages from the masters were disappointing. Same tired old advice. Be nonviolent. Be loving. Blah blah blah.pThere were a few interesting parts in the book for me. I have given it two stars, not just one. But in general I had the impression that the author wanted another book out there, though he had nothing new to say. And his title messages from the masters was a come-on that wasn't lived up to.pI'm sure I would agree with him on almost everything he says. The way I see the current Iraq conflict, as our president tries his hardest to mobilize a peace-loving American public to want to invade a foreign country, is that although Saddam Hussein is about as low as they come, we haven't yet tried to sit down with him and talk face to face to work this out, not to mention the fact that we were the ones who gave him his chemical weapons in the first place, to use against Iran, and we were the ones who manufactured the anthrax that somehow got into the U.S. mail and killed a few people, so there is a huge element of hypocrisy here. pThis philosophy of mine would mesh well with Brian Weiss, who is a peacenik like myself, though perhaps moreso. In the final analysis, I really have no problem with kicking Saddam Hussein out of office, though for the life of me I can't justify our continued use of sanctions against his country, which kill so many innocent people for no reason. They accomplished nothing good, and never will, so can them. All of which, of course, has nothing to do with this book. Well, actually, it does. Think about it. A little love and peace and caring.pOne further complaint I have about this book is a comment the author makes, that we have no feelings in Heaven, that our souls have no feelings. That is inhuman. He's got to have that wrong. He says all we have there is a sense of well being and love. That sounds like a load ...to me. It sounds like we're all drugged. No feelings? No real emotions other than some kind of la dee dah love? If Heaven is as boring as that, no wonder people want to return to a world of pain and suffering and fear and worry and insecurity. At least we can have some real feelings here. But I don't believe the author. I'm sure that in Heaven we have rich and wonderful feelings, and they are not like the drug "soma" in the book Brave New World, keeping us all drugged up with a sense of well being.
Healing!!!! February 26, 2003 When my father died, I read this book. It was the last book he read two weeks before he died. He finished the last page, put the book down, looked up at my mother with a smile on his face and said, "I am not afraid anymore. I can die now, and it's okay." As I read the book, I saw more and more why he said that and why the last few days of my fathers life were so peaceful. He knew something. Thank you for this book, Dr. Weiss!!!

This book provides a fantastic account of how having a 'conscious awareness' of our own soul and its purpose of being in this life can help us as humans to heal from our troubled experiences with family members, relationships and with ourselves...etc, by understanding the nature of karmic progression and soul evolution.
