| Editorial Reviews:
From Amazon.com The highest grossing film in Japanese box-office history (more than $234 million), Hayao Miyazaki's ISpirited Away/I (ISen To Chihiro Kamikakushi/I) is a dazzling film that reasserts the power of drawn animation to create fantasy worlds. Like Dorothy in IThe Wizard of Oz/I and Lewis Carroll's Alice, Chihiro (voice by Daveigh Chase--Lilo in Disney's ILilo Stitch/I) plunges into an alternate reality. On the way to their new home, the petulant adolescent and her parents find what they think is a deserted amusement park. Her parents stuff themselves until they turn into pigs, and Chihiro discovers they're trapped in a resort for traditional Japanese gods and spirits. An oddly familiar boy named Haku (Jason Marsden) instructs Chihiro to request a job from Yubaba (Suzanne Pleshette), the greedy witch who rules the spa. As she works, Chihiro's untapped qualities keep her from being corrupted by the greed that pervades Yubaba's mini-empire. In a series of fantastic adventures, she purges a river god suffering from human pollution, rescues the mysterious No-Face, and befriends Yubaba's kindly twin, Zeniba (Pleshette again). The resolve, bravery, and love Chihiro discovers within herself enable her to aid Haku and save her parents. The result is a moving and magical journey, told with consummate skill by one of the masters of contemporary animation. MPAA Rated: PG ("Some scary moments") I--Charles Solomon/I
Additional Features The most interesting extra feature on the two-disc set is the Nippon Television Special on the making of ISpirited Away/I, not because it's significantly different from American making-of programs, but because the camera crew was allowed to film Miyazaki at work. It's fascinating to watch the visionary director explaining how individual movements should be animated, and even performing the little dance the frog-master does to welcome the No-Face to Yubaba's bath house. (Old animators describe Walt Disney giving similar performances, but no comparable footage exists.) It's also striking to see how intimate Studio Ghibli is, unencumbered by the tiers of management that burden American studios. The scene comparisons enable the viewer to study the storyboards for the film, which Miyazaki draws himself. These simple yet wonderfully vivid images capture the essence of a mood, a movement, an expression. "Behind the Microphone" offers a fairly standard behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the excellent English version of ISpirited Away/I. I--Charles Solomon/I
--IHelen Faradji/I

Amazing! September 23, 2008 Lila May I will keep this short and sweet. This is a fantastic movie. So good that I wish there was a sequel, (even though we all know that that would never happen) because this movie was so special. I loved it. It's just one of those movies that makes you happy every time you watch it. Girls and guys alike will thoroughly enjoy it. I am generally very easy to please when it comes to movies, but the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli movies are sure to please any movie critics out there. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes anime, or just likes to have fun.
Pure Imagination August 24, 2007 Mikey D (Montreal) I can watch this movie over and over again and find something new every time. The story is pure imagination, the animation is phenomenal, and the whole movie takes you away to another place. An all time classic.

Swept away by 'Spirited Away'... October 18, 2004 Christopher J. Hall (North Lincolnshire, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
'Spirited Away' will sweep you off you feet and send you on a thrilling adventure into Miyazaki's lushly animated world full of wonderful creatures and lovably bizarre characters in a movie that will captivate you for almost two hours. It certainly did me. p'Spirited Away' is such a rare treat in today's world with little new been done with conventional cartoons in the world of cinema. Instead, all the major studios are opting for CGI-driven movies that may please visually, but tend to lack in everything else. 'Spirited Away' is lavishly beautiful too the eye, yet is also a strongly structured tale that has the heart missing out of most modern-day animation making this movie really stand out from the crowd and a definite must-see. pThe story focuses around a little girl named Chihiro who becomes deserted from her parents, only to return and find that they have been turned into pigs. Here she befriends the magically talented and graceful Haku, who safely guides her through, what the place she has found herself in, becomes after nightfall - a spa hotel for thousands of Japan's gods and spirits. Haku tells her that she must find work in there if she is to stay and find a way to break the spell on her parents before they become dinner for some of the hotel's demanding guests. pI could find little wrong with 'Spirited Away', which is a lot coming from someone who is always trying to find something wrong with everything. I was utterly captivated in this movie from start to finish. It has everything. Fantasy, the supernatural, comedy, drama... You name it, this movie has it. I've never found that I could recommend an animated movie as highly as I can with this luxurious tale. pThe character design is fabulous meaning you're guaranteed to meet many kinds of gods, spirits, and creatures that you won't come across anywhere else. Some of the characters literally made me say wow! as they really are outstanding p'Spirited Away' is absolutely spellbinding throughout and worthy of all the praise it has, and will receive in the present and near future. pSee it now!
