Words cannot capture the delights of IThe Triplets of Belleville/I, an astonishing animated movie from the mind of French director Sylvain Chomet. In fact, there are only a few spoken sentences in the entire film; most of the soundtrack is a mix of squeaks, barks, and the jazzy music of Benoit Charest. A bicyclist is kidnapped from the Tour de France by mysterious gangsters; his grandmother travels to the city of Belleville (which has a sardonic version of the Statue of Liberty in its harbor), where she tracks him down with the help of a musical trio gone to seed, the Belleville Triplets. This hand-drawn movie is unlike anything you'll see from Disney; every scene mixes the silent comedy of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton--in which the world of objects subtly fights with living beings for mastery--and the bouncy hop of Betty Boop. Unique and mesmerizing. I--Bret Fetzer/I

- IHelen Faradji/I.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, original and very well done!   April 1, 2008

This is a great film, done with unique animation styles and great characterization. It has great throwbacks to french history, with nods to Django Reinhardt and Josephine Baker, among others, but you don't need to any of that to enjoy the film. There is virtually no speech in the movie and it doesn't need any - so don't even bother fiddling with subtitles in the menu - just hit play. This is an enjoyable romp ranging from satire on the sport of cycling to the extremes that the poor old triplets go to for supper. The frog escapades had me roaring with laughter. There is nudity in the first part of the show, so I don't think this is a show for young children - probably teens or up so that they can follow what's going on. I recommend this show strongly to anime fans who are looking for something very different than the standard animated fare, or to adults who enjoy cartoons with added bite. (read: shoes with teeth ;))

4 out of 5 stars Eddy Merckx In Yellow ?   January 25, 2007

Released in 2003, and only 78 minutes long "Belleville Rendez-Vous" is a rather quirky animated film. Directed and written by Sylvain Chomet, it was nominated for two Oscars (Animated Feature Film and Best Song) and won the inaugural BBC FOUR World Cinema Award. br / br /Madame Souza is the film's heroine. A widow with a club foot, she is responsible for raising Champion, her young, orphaned grandson. Champion appears to be an introverted, lonely child, something that worries his grandmother. Her efforts to cheer him up include buying him a puppy called Bruno - unfortunately, Bruno isn't welcomed with any great amount of enthusiasm. However, the discovery of a scrapbook tells Madame Souza exactly what Champion is interested in : cycling. She promptly buys him his first bicycle, something that brings the reaction she has been hoping for. br / br /The years pass by and, even as an adult, Champion is passionate about his sport. His grandmother supervises his rigorous training, in preparation for the Tour de France. Madame Souza and Bruno have also, apparently, been employed in the race's "broom wagon". (This is a van, used to pick up the cyclists at the back of the peloton who have decided to abandon the race). However, on the stage to Mont Ventoux, Madam Souza's broom wagon is sabotaged. The saboteurs are members of the French Mafia, who - using a fake broom wagon - kidnap Champion and two other permanently breathless cyclists. Mounting a rescue, Madame Souza and Bruno follow the kidnappers to Belleville - a huge city, part New York, part Quebec and part Montreal. It's also home to three very helpful, old-time singing sisters. br / br /It's very difficult not to like Madame Souza - a very determined old lady, she has nothing but her grandson's best interests at heart. Bruno, the old dog, is always worth a smile to two. His main interests are barking at trains, eating and sleeping - he also provides one or two slightly strange, but also funny, dream sequences. Although a French film, there is really no need for any dubbing or subtitling as there's virtually no dialogue. Quirky in parts, a little surreal in others, it wouldn't be a typical Disney film - it's one that would be enjoyed more by adults than children.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding!   February 27, 2005

This is a film so highly creative and unique, it draws you in and captivates you from start to finish, then leaves you feeling as though you have just witnessed something revolutionary in the film industry. At a glance it looks to be a remake of an older French animation film, however it is new (2003), and French-Canadian writer/director Sylvain Chomet uses this unique, comical and exagerated 1930-ish cartoon style to perfection. The story itself is equally entertaining. If you don't parlez vous Francais, don't worry - there are only about 10 words spoken in the entire film. It is a visual masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars It's Own Animated Movie   July 19, 2004
David Anderson (St. Cloud, MN)
Triplets of Belleville (Belleville Rendez-Vous) is a highly unique modern-day animated film. It garnered two 2003 Oscar nominations: Best Animated Film and Best Original Song. This French film shows how to keep audiences entertained for eighty minutes without hearing much dialogue. The only dialogue heard is from the radio, the music, and the television. This has not often been mastered so delightfully since the days of silent movies in the 1920's. Its chain of events remain interesting throughout: the dog always barking at the train to the bike race to the kidnapping to the grandmother's rescue quest to her meeting with the Belleville triplets. The characters' facial expressions and the sound effects alone tell the story wonderfully. The different versions of the song of the same french name gives this film the added viewing pleasure. Many viewers may have this song stuck in their heads for a while due to the catchiness. The animations were drawn wonderfully, offering unique visions of the physical surroundings and the characters. The details and the use of color digs deeper into the artists' creative minds. Such overall film quality makes Triplets of Belleville sure to please audiences. This unique film will be remembered for a long time.

1 out of 5 stars A Bomb!   July 18, 2004

This is the worst movie I have seen since "The Black Pirates." That goers back 60 years. It was dull, badly put together and pretentious in the extreme. I should have known the French never produce anything worthwhile. Any people who had a 75 year old love affair with Edith Piaf, "The Singing Waif," (lousy voice, stupid songs), could only produce something like this; that makes an "in thing" out of ugly pictures, disgusting scenes and lousy music. What a bomb!
