Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
North & South is a splendid, four-hour adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 19th century novel about an unlikely, and somewhat star-crossed, love between a middle-class young woman from England's cultivated south and an intemperate if misunderstood industrialist in a hardscrabble, northern city. Daniela Denby-Ashe plays Margaret Hale, forthright and strong-willed daughter of a former vicar (Tim Pigott-Smith) who relocates his family from a pastoral village outside London to unforgiving, largely illiterate Milton, a factory town where John Thornton (Richard Armitage) and his mother (Sinead Cusack), survivors of poverty, rule their cotton mill with an iron hand. Thornton befriends Margaret's father but incurs her wrath for his severity with his workers. What she doesn't notice is Thornton's core sense of responsibility for his employees' welfare. On the other hand, he misinterprets some of Margaret's own actions and intentions. Equally stubborn, the two drag out their obvious attraction over many painful months and events.

North & South's two leads are both very good, though Armitage's brooding, penetrating performance may very well be considered a classic one day. There are other wonders in the cast: Cusack and Pigott-Smith are superb, and Brendan Coyle is memorable as a firebrand union organizer who ultimately becomes an ally to a softening Thornton. The miniseries script by Sandy Welch is a persuasive mix of historical context and character study. Brian Percival's direction is full of moments that linger in the imagination, such as the winter-dream look of a busy cotton mill, with thousands of snowy fibers floating in the air. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.   October 3, 2008
It was recommended on some Jane Eyre message boards. All this talk about if you loved Jane Eyre, then you'll love North and South, especially Richard Armitage as John Thornton. So I made a blind purchase and I do not regret it in the slightest. I had never heard of it or read the book before I saw it, have since read the novel. It is in my top mini-series. The acting and locations were great, the adaptation was brilliant. Costumes and the kiss to end all kisses (for the romantic in all of us). Yup, no regrets.

4 out of 5 stars North and South - Drame dans le genre de Dickens   August 11, 2008
North & South

5 out of 5 stars The Differences Between North and South   July 7, 2008

Also based on the book of the same name, North and South takes place in 1800's Milton, England. Margaret Hale is uprooted from her southern home because her father has a mid-life crisis of sorts and decides to move the family to Milton, a small cotton-milling town in the north.

With no income, her father decides to teach philosophy. One of his students is the mill owner, mill owner John Thornton. Margaret does not approve of Thorton, thinking he is too harsh with his employees. However, like the leading woman in Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice, Margaret starts to see some good in him.

There have been some comparisons with Pride and Prejudice done with North and South, and I certainly see some similarities. However, this is an excellent story in it's own right and there are some differences. Especially how Margaret befriends the poorer towns people.

I truly enjoyed North and South and highly recommend it. I can see myself re-visiting it from time to time, as I do with Pride and Prejudice. I also hope to read the book North and South one of these days.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!   May 5, 2008
This is a must see. Great for lovers of period dramas, romance, and facinating for those interested in the Industrial Revolution and it's class struggles.

I'm such a selective viewer, and love offer every critique I can. However, in this case the cast and crew have achieved perfection. Congrats to all of them! And thanks! I'll enjoy this for years to come.

I bought this movie really just going on the reviews listed already and am SO glad I did! I must admit I've watched it many times and continue to enjoy it. The characters are wonderful to get to know, the acting superb, and the music absolutly perfect for each scene. It's "darker" in theme and in the actual filming than Pride and Prejudice, but it was so interesting to see life from the working class point of view. This is well worth buying!
