From Amazon.com Launched during the neon-lit 1980s, IThe Golden Girls/I shed light on a side of Miami ignored by IMiami Vice/I. In other words, no drugs, no murder--just four women of "a certain age," spending their golden years in the sun. Like the theme, "Thank You for Being a Friend," the long-running sitcom was about friendship (not crime). As for the "girls," they were tart-tongued Dorothy (Beatrice Arthur), former farm girl Rose (Betty White), Southern belle Blanche (Rue McClanahan), and Dorothy's salty Sicilian mother Sophia (Estelle Getty). All were widows, with the exception of the divorced Dorothy. Created by Emmy-winning producer Susan Harris (ISoap/I), IThe Golden Girls/I re-ignited the careers of 1970s TV veterans Arthur (IAll in the Family/I, IMaude/I) and White (IThe Mary Tyler Moore Show/I). At the same time, it made stars of McClanahan (who co-starred on IMaude/I), by playing a comic version of IA Streetcar Named Desire/I's Blanche Dubois, and the scene-stealing Getty, made to look older than her actual age (she and Arthur were born the same year). p Notable guests to lend their talents to the first season include IStar Trek: Voyager/I's Robert Picardo ("The Operation"), IAlice/I's Polly Holliday ("Blind Ambitions"), and IWKRP in Cincinnati/I's Gordon Jump ("Big Daddy"). In addition, Harold Gould (IRhoda/I), who appears in "Rose the Prude," would return as a (different) recurring character five years later. p IThe Golden Girls/I ran for seven seasons and spawned spin-off IThe Golden Palace/I (without Arthur) and a British version called IThe Brighton Belles/I. By the end of its run in 1992, it had garnered numerous awards, including two Emmys for best comedy series. In addition, each of the four actresses received a well-deserved Emmy for her efforts. Love this show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! September 22, 2008 Barbara Gibson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) I just have to say that I loved this show and so glad I own the complete set. Yes I have all of the seasons and love them all. Great to sit back and enjoy some good, clean, FUNNY women. I know a lot fo the lines in the show but they still make me laugh, and laugh out loud! These girls sure are a treasure. Thanks Golden Girls, THANK YOU.
Good Shows / Bad Special Features! June 17, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Shows = Good brSpecial Features = POOR!brugh! The Fashion Commentary is brutal, who cares what they think!! Get some Rare Footage on there, and maybe a SHOW STAR to give a Commentary!! Get some DECENT Special Features! The Episode Quality however is Great! Sound and Clear Picture!brTake the good with the Bad!
A true godsend April 11, 2005 Saburo (Tsu, Japan) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I started watching the Golden Girls from about season 3 or 4 and was hooked right from the start. Youcan therefore understand how much I am valuing this initial release. I don't tire of any of the episodes. I have watched each episode a couple of times but each time I react like it is the first time I am watching it. The sound is not the greatest but it is ok. I intend to buy every single season that is released on dvd. Before the dvds, I had recorded some episodes on tape which I guarded jealously and so for me, the dvd is a true godsend. I'm sure every true fun of the show will be happy with the dvd.
Can't wait for season 2 and 3 and etc January 10, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I live in an area where my cable company doesn't offer any station with Golden Girls reruns. I received Season 1 for Christmas and have already watched half of the shows. I don't want them to end. The shows are just as funny and enjoyable as they were when they were first released. I can't wait until the next season(s) are released. There hasn't been a sitcom that has come even close to the Golden Girls. I never missed an episode during the seven years it was telecast and now I associate even more with the gals being that I am now closer to their age. I pray that the producers of these DVDs don't give up until all seasons have been put out on DVD.
They're Back!!!!!!! December 31, 2004 D. Bruce (Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The girls are back and it's about time!!! The Golden Girls was one of the best sitcoms of the 80s and this collection is a great walk down memory lane. This is a must have for the die-hard Golden Girl Fan, or even the occasional viewer. The special features are a bit of a disappointment, but all and all a great collection. I look forward to the second season!!!!!
