From Amazon.com The British sitcom The Office has the most devoted following this side of Monty Python, so an American remake seemed doomed. Amazingly, the remake actually finds its own enjoyable version of the original's uncanny comedy of embarrassment. Office manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell, The Daily Show, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) believes he's the beloved leader of the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of a paper products company--but his relentless and painfully forced efforts at comedy creep out everyone around him, including paranoid Dwight (Rainn Wilson, who had a memorable recurring role on Six Feet Under), nervous receptionist Pam (Jenna Fischer, LolliLove), and aimless salesman Jim (John Krasinski, A New Wave), who's smitten with the already engaged Pam. The pilot episode suffers from closely replicating the British pilot, but after that The Office finds its own footing, turning diversity training, an office birthday party, and a basketball game into excruciating yet hypnotically funny rituals of humiliation. Carell, though clearly talented, can't match Ricky Gervais' unique performance as the aggressively needy British manager (it's hard to imagine that anyone could); as a result, the supporting roles become more prominent, and Wilson, Fischer, and Krasinski quickly create a rapport that matches and may even exceed that of their British counterparts. Be sure to watch the deleted scenes; remarkably, they're as good as the material that made it on the air in this six-episode season. --Bret Fetzer

A tale of two Offices May 17, 2006 Heather Brady (Toronto, Canada) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I don't know what possessed NBC to remake the BBC's incredible comedy The Office, but I'm so glad they did. Though they both follow the same basic premise and have similar cast members, this show is distinctly brilliant in its own right. It's easy for me to keep both versions separate in my mind, and I believe there is plenty of room in the TV universe for both shows to exist. On a purely technical note, it's also a rare treat to have a high-quality, widescreen comedy.
A Series In Its Own Right January 22, 2006 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I loved the British version of The Office, and I thought this one was going to stink, as American remakes of British shows generally tend to do. I'm glad I tuned in anyway, because I was so, so wrong. Not to take anything away from the absolute genius of the original, but if anything I enjoy this one more, probably because the American cultural milieu is slightly more familiar to me as a Canadian. It just feels a little closer to home. And of course a big part of the brilliance of The Office is how true to life it is - how close to home it hits. I think the real triumph of this version is the interaction of Jim and Pam (the American Tim and Dawn), which could not be more perfect. This show is still definitely recognizable as The Office, but it stands on its own merits rather than slavishly trying to reproduce the exact tone of the original. That's why it works.

this show is fantastic. it doesn't matter where it is set, this show will always be hilarious. some think that the americans came in and peed all over the british version but these people are sadly mistaken. who complains about the funniest show in existence times two? two versions of the office? yes please. i recommend everyone only watch the office from now on. both versions. you know why? because it's the law.
An EXCELLENT translation of the British show January 13, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm in the UK and loved BOTH versions of the Office. The US version with Steve Carell is perfectly formed and brilliantly structured in that it captures everything that made the British original work so well while adding the touches of American culture and contemporary references to tailor it for US audiences - this was the best possible job they could have done and as a translation it is simply fantastic televsion!
Knock-Off British Version November 20, 2005 MR J D PURCELL (United Kingdom) 2 out of 45 found this review helpful
Congratulations to the americans. Thanks for taking a fantastic British comedy and trying to put your own 'spin' on things. You simply cannot pull it off. If you are thinking of buying this, then make sure you have seen the original BBC version first!! Anyone with any sense will then see what a mistake purchasing this DVD would be.
