Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
The cult television show (in which a hapless space explorer and his robot pals are forced to watch and deliver a hilarious running commentary on bad movies) makes a successful transition to the big screen as Mike and the 'bots lay waste to the '50s sci-fi yarn This Island Earth (a painfully stiff would-be epic that's actually a cut above the usual MST3K fare). While ardent fans may be a little miffed that more advantage isn't taken of the expanded theatrical venue (aside from a tad more scatological humor than usual, the content here would fit in comfortably as a regular episode of the series), the nonstop, hyper-literate salvo of comedy riffs that run the gamut from references to Tommy Chong's backyard to Yes album covers more than make up for any conceptual complacency. Be prepared to laugh till it aches. --Andrew Wright

4 out of 5 stars Inanely funny vid, but...   October 11, 2008
d'Pappy (d'Great White North)
Watched a VHS version of this vid with mi-laddos a number of years ago and tryly enjoyed it. Decided to add a DVD copy to my library. It's the movie alright, but the first thing I noticed (and turned my nose up at) was its lack of scene selections. I mean WTF's with that?!? Ain't this 2008?
Anyway, that's my one & only complaint (which explains the 4-starred rating - otherwise it would've gotten 5!).
If you're a fan of any space program parody (Red Dwarf, Hitchhiker's Guide...), then do yourself a favour and add this to your library.

5 out of 5 stars It's about freakin' time!   September 27, 2008

Do not hesitate, do not pass go, ignore the fact that this dvd is quite possibly the worst packaging of a movie ever (no extras or chapter selection). You must own this movie. Buy it, watch it and share it with all your friends. This is the funniest and most quotable movie since "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". You will not stop laughing when you and your friends repeat the clever riffs to eachother, even days and weeks later.

For the longest time, this movie was no longer available without shelling out $400+ to some jerk on Ebay, but now it's back!!!

Buy this now!

5 out of 5 stars 74 Minutes of Funny   May 6, 2008

I'll keep this very brief...

It's not too darned often that I'll give a five star review to such a slim product. This new DVD re-release contains no extras whatsoever (not even chapter selection). Furthermore, the whole thing clocks in at just over 74 minutes (and that includes the end credits).

Nevertheless, those 74 minutes are among the funniest 74 minutes of any comedy film ever made. On that basis -- and on that basis alone -- this disc is worth your time and money.

If you're a longtime MSTie, you'll want to get this (assuming you don't own it already). If you've never seen an episode of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" before in your life, this is as good an introduction to the show as you can find.

4 out of 5 stars Great, Fun little movie!   August 24, 2005

In spite of all it's misgivings, MST3K: The Movie is pretty funny, and if you are a MSTie who has always wanted to hear Tom Servo swear, well this is your movie. A few downsides to the film is that the folks at Universal told the MST3K boys that they had to pick one of their movies (obviously) but it couldn't have been a "bad" movie (What the hell? That's the whole point. Movie execs.. I'll never get them.) and while it is shorter than your average MST3K episode (And runs shorter the original version of "This Island Earth" which is the movie the boys riff) it's still an entertaining watch.
Be farwarned though, the movie has been out of print for quite some time and there are certain people out there in internet land who will try and gouge you 100 bucks and upwards for it (as of the time of this writing some knuckle knob is charging 415 bucks for a USED copy.. OBSURD!) I recomend you check EVERYWHERE before you finally open up your wallet.

I managed to find it online for a fairly decent price. Keep your eye out, and if all else fails and your not picky about VHS, get it on VHS as most dealers and getting rid of VHS like the plague.

3 out of 5 stars Look around, and you might find it. . .   July 9, 2004

I bought this movie for 7 bucks (used) at a movie/music/book store. I suggest doing the same, since it's being sold for MUCH more on the internet. Hunt around - there's bound to be someone who sold it not knowing it's real worth.

While this movie is definitely not as good as the t.v. episodes, it is worth seeing.
