The Second Vatican Council closed in 1965, and shortly thereafter, the Catholic Church split into two distinct factions. On the one hand were those who saw the council documents as justification for throwing out Catholic doctrine, and on the other were those who vigorously resisted them.
Among those who resisted the abandonment of doctrine were people who realized that the Council was, in fact, a much overdue recognition of the true relationship between religion and culture. Those level-headed few were a minority, however, and most simply dug in their heels while silently or otherwise looking upon the Second Vatican Council as a huge mistake.
