A Genuine Collector's Edition October 11, 2008 Neil Olsen (Victoria, BC) So many so called collector's editions are ripoffs. This is definitely not the case with this set. The film itself is an absolute classic and worth the purchase alone, even despite the Hollywoodization and Americanization of an amazing story. What really makes it is the second disc with a series of fascinating documentaries, including the excellent British Granada documentary on the actual escape. A great film, accompanied with some superb background and historical information. Definitely one worth having in your collection, especially for anyone who wants to know what really happened.
Not as advertised, poor quality, so sad for a classic August 25, 2008 JMJimmy (Canada) I LOVE this movie, it's a classic. br / br /This DVD is junk. It is NOT anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1), it's in fact matted "widescreen", in otherwords 2.35:1 ratio squished into a 4:3 fullscreen presentation so no matter what TV you watch it on it'll appear small. br / br /On top of that the left side of the transfer appears blue, green, or dark throughout the entire presentation. There are also significant artifacts which have not been removed and the sound does not appear to have been properly cleaned up from the degradation of the celluloid film. br / br /Even for the price (purchased mine at 6.99) it's not worth it. I own the VHS as well and it's better quality and fills more of the screen.
Great movie, but so-so on DVD August 7, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the definitive story of escape during WW11. And, despite what a previous reviewer said, there were Americans in the camp, and Americans played a big part in digging the tunnel, and in all other operations. The reason no Americans actually escaped using the tunnel, was they were moved to their own compound (south compound) before the tunnel broke. The characters in the movie are composites, and are livened up a bit for dramatic purposes, but most exist. The man who was clausrophobic was a South African named Johnny Travis. He had worked in the gold mines, and was caught in a mine collapse before the war making him afraid of small spaces. He did dig this tunnel, and others, before they discovered he had a gift for making things and moved him to manufacturing escape kits. The Cooler King was actually American Colonel Jerry Sage, a member of the O.S.S. and one of the most fearless men ever seen in a prison camp (he actually stole the Commandant's alarm clock from beside his bed, but the other prisoner's were afraid to ask him how he managed it). Being American he did not have a chance to use the tunnel. But he did always take his glove and ball into the cooler. (Sage did eventually escape by other means - read his book Sage: Dagger of the O.S.S.) If you want to know how this escape really happened this is the movie for you. Just buy the VHS version, unless you already have a widescreen set-up.
If you have the original DVD release SELL IT NOW!!! June 29, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Okay....All the extras are great...and there are MANY featurettes and interviews to keep you busy for hours....BUT..the main point I want to make is for all of you who don't care about extras and figure you already have this on DVD....you don't...brthis transfer is AMAZING!!! it is a real HIGH DEFINITION transfer and STUNNING is what they say on the case and its true! Many DVDs say digitally transfered....and often that just means they pulled it from a previously issued laserdisc via digital output...you have never seen this movie this pristine....EVER!
TRUE AND INSPIRING AND TRAGIC June 25, 2004 Robin Simmons (Palm Springs area, CA United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
THE GREAT ESCAPE Special Edition (MGM) is based with fidelity on Paul Brickhill's best-seller. The inspiring story is about heroic men who cannot be broken and refuse to give up. pThis was Steve McQueen's career defining role but it's the late and much lamented Charles Bronson that you most remember as the taciturn tunnel digger with claustrophobia. pPreviously released on DVD, this hi-def transfer has new 5.1 surround sound, and interesting extras that include five featurettes, a terrific documentary on the untold true story and a commentary track that includes John Sturges, some of the cast (including the late James Coburn) and crew.
