4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Ballet Class for Beginners.   March 6, 2008
jane smith
The only reason I give this dvd 4 stars and not 5, is because exercises are not repeated on the other side and it can be a bit bland at times. br / br /That being said, the class itself is excellent. David Howard is an excellent instructor, he explains everything very well even mentioning things like the direction and flow of the movement, the illusion of effortlessness, and what the terms (which are all in french) mean. It's almost as good as having a real class. It covers the basics of ballet and introduces you to the terminology which is also displayed on the screen during the lesson. I do recommend (if you are an absolute beginner) that before you start you watch the dvd a couple of times first because it does move quite quickly. But after a while everything starts sinking in and you'll be quite pleased that you know what the hell 'Rond de jambe en lair' means, that for a dancer fondu is not in reference to cheese, and that you can 'pirouette en Dehors'. br / br /I noticed that one of the reviewers was disappointed because this was not a workout. No this is not a workout hence the title BALLET CLASS and not Ballet workout. This dvd is technique so don't expect to break a sweat but do expect to learn something about ballet basics. br / br /I definitely recommend this dvd to anyone who wants to familiarise themselves with ballet; it is an excellent introduction and will prove most useful to all ballet beginners.

3 out of 5 stars Basics are covered but too fast paced.   December 18, 2003

I have been taking beginner ballet classes and purchased this video to help me understand the steps, especially those I was having a hard time with. This video covered the basics as in class, but it moved way to fast. It is difficult to keep up with and even more difficult to have to rewind to go over steps. It requires time and patience.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got this video. It is definitely educational and beautiful. I also like the music. It has encouraged me to work toward my goal.

4 out of 5 stars Great video, but not for absolute beginners!   September 24, 2002

This video goes through a lot of ballet moves in a short time (40 min), and focuses on how to execute the moves correctly. If you are already taking a ballet class it'll help you improve your technique, and it also gives you explanations for the French terminology used in ballet. David Howard is a great instructor, and the young ballerina executes the steps perfectly. Most of the moves are only demonstrated on one side, so you have to pause the tape to work on the other side. For a beginner this video will probably be too complicated. If you want a first introduction to ballet, I think the "Ballet 101" and "Ballet 201" videos are better. If you want an exercise video I would recommend "The Ballet Workout" with Melissa Lowe instead; it's easier, and you don't have to pause the tape to work on both sides.

5 out of 5 stars A good tape for grade 2 upwards   June 18, 2002

I bought this tape for my daughter (aged 10) to practise at home between ballet classes (she takes six hours of ballet classes a week). We have both found it extremely helpful: the pace is very good, the dancer demonstrates positions clearly and has good turn-out and feet. I am not a trained dancer and with the assistance of this tape, I now take part in my daughter's dancing at home. I believe she has improved as a direct result of watching this video. It possibly wouldn't be as useful to someone wanting a keep-fit lesson. It really seems to be aimed at dancers wishing to learn and then improve the basics.
