From Amazon.com Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brand of advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away with such a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genial earnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-IWest Side Story/I). This modest production became a huge hit and remains one of MGM's best-loved musical comedies, an energetic, high-kicking classic. I--Sean Axmaker/I

I love Howard Keel in this... September 7, 2005 Christine1012 (Toronto, Ontario Canada) It's a typical musical, happy endings and all. I'm a big Howard Keel fan and I like how he's always literally larger than life. The music and the dancing are great. The barn raising sequence is a wonder to watch...of course we can't forget the rest of the cast, rising stars in the making...Julie Newmar/Newmeyer, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Rall and Jacques D'Amboise...And the interviews as part of the special features were great...these actors have aged with grace...and the movie is timeless....
Beefcake in Buckskins September 11, 2004 Wendy Myles (Toronto, Canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
All the praises lavished on this delightful entertainment are well-deserved. Despite its low production budget, the movie is nevertheless an example of the brilliance that was Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in its heyday as the Rolls-Royce of studios.pHoward Keel looks Hunky-dory in his buckskins, and the big slice of beefcake looks even better when he ditches the beard a few moments after belting out Bless Yore Beautiful Hide in that virile baritone of his. His leading lady, Jane Powell, is adorable in this, her best role. HOWEVER herein lies my only complaint: lack of chemistry between the two leads. While she is clearly head-over-heels about him, he, throughout most of the movie, is cool with her, and it seems as if they do not truly come together until the very last sequence. Her yearning for him is palpable, and pitiable. It appears as if he's longing for the exquisite Kathryn Grayson, off whom he could not keep his hands in Show Boat and Kiss Me, Kate.pWatch Tommy Rall as the sixth brother. All critical attention is focused on Russ Tamblyn, the baby, and thus, the cutest of the younger brothers. Nevertheless, Rall brings not only his inimitable dancing talent, but also humour to the role of the belligerent Frank(incense) -- not to mention macho good looks!pA final plus is the documentary section of the DVD. We meet almost all of the movie's performers, all of whom have, sadly, aged -- with the exception of Ruta Lee. Best in this section is Michael Kidd, the choreographer wunderkind. In a marvelous interview, he is unintentionally hysterically funny, as he relates his initial opposition to the idea of making a musical centring around seven slobs -- his own words.
Fun movie! July 7, 2004 The movie Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is an excellent, fun, family movie with singing, dancing, romance, and even some action. It tells the story of seven brothers who all live together way out in the country. When the eldest brother, Adam, comes home from town one day with a wife, the other six brothers decide they want brides too. They have to battle the townsmen, however, who have already "spoken for the girls." This movie is full of fun and laughs, and I would highly recommend it.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers March 16, 2004 D. Slife (Iowa USA) This is a great film, two wonderful singers. Good story line as well. My kids, my husband and myself all like this one! It is a good family film everyone will enjoy.
I LOVE THIS FILM SO MUCH March 12, 2004 BlueWater (Bethesda,MD) I mean who wouldnt love, not like, but love this incredible film. This was the first film that I watched when I was growing up. It is similar to pretty woman but reverse because here are 7 rough western thugs that in need of brides to tame them, after their oldest brother got married. Not only did the film have good actors and actresses that were too funny to ignore, but the music and dancing were just as good. I love it and can you believe all but one brother are still alive today? Wow!!!!
