TOUPEES UNTD! July 15, 2002 Esther (LA CA USA) Are we really supposed to believe that Fred Astaire had MORE hair when he was 80 than when he was 20? Apart from that it shows how talented Fred and Gene were even though they were collecting their pension!pMuch of the dialogue given to the pair is VERY corny but their annecdotes are very sweet [the one about Judy Garland singing Have urself a merry little xmas for example]pIt does drag on a bit sometimes notably the non-musical bits but the affection in their voices shows what they think or dont think of certain stars.pI really liked the singing the credits and opening sequence is amazing.
Great Clips, Lousy Organization, Rotten Editing June 25, 2002 Gary F. Taylor (Biloxi, MS USA) Like its predecessor, THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT II offers two hours of film clips from memorable MGM movies featuring the likes of Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, and Doris Day. Unlike its predecessor, which organized the film clips into thematic sequences introduced by different MGM stars, THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT just throws the clips out willynilly without much rhyme or reason--and saddles narrators Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly with some of the clunkiest, corniest material imaginable. In consequence, it lacks the cohesion and the excitement of the original.pBut it still has its charms. Many of the individual clips are knock-outs: Ethel Waters performing Taking a Chance on Love from CABIN IN THE SKY, Bobby Van doing the famous hop dance from SMALL TOWN GIRL, Judy Garland belting out I Got Rythmn from GIRL CRAZY. In addition to such musical treats, the film also offers a look at the Marx Brothers with the famous State Room Scene from A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, a sequence of famous lines from famous films (such as Garbo's I want to be alone), and an extended tribute to Spenser Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. Most viewers will probably feel the film drags due to the uneven way in which the scenes are introduced and edited together, but just about every one will find plenty to enjoy. Recommended with reservations.
Great look into the history of MGM musicals June 5, 2002 This video features some of the best footage from MGM's vast library of musicals along with some of the most legendary stars of all time. Among the featured people are Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Lena Horne (you can recognize her by her extremely white smile), Doris Day, the Marx brothers, and so on. Astaire and Kelly also appear in new footage shot solely for the film, and it proved that they were as talented in 1976 as they were in 1946 (or even earlier)...they could still sing and "cut a rug". Highly recommended for film history buffs.
Not nearly as good as part one. December 2, 2001 Max Fulton (Portland Oregon) That's Entertainment Part 2 certainly was not a well produced as part 1. Though there are some excellent clips like the Good Mornin' scene from Singin In The Rain, they don't measure up to those of the first one. There are also comedic scenes from movies like Adam's Rib and A Night At The Opera added in , but instead of enhancing the montage they seem out of place and it feels like the producers were simply trying to fill the 2 hour, 9 minute time slot. Also, in the first film we had stars like Liz Taylor and Jimmy Stewart giving us a first-hand look at the legendary MGM backlot and providing us with an intruiging history of the studio, but in this we've only got Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, who are both VERY talented, singing the same song over and over and using cheap camera tricks. Flaws aside this is a good bet for all musical fans!
Part 2 of THAT`S ENTERTAINMENT IS AS GOOD AS 1 ONE January 14, 1999 My ohmy.... Well we all know that MGM released over 200 musical films - almost all better than any produced by other studios(well, I agree - it was an overstatement). But in the 70`s, long after the original musicals lost the general interest, MGM released two compilation films of their rich musical past. And they did it with the same inventiveness that made the ol`ones so special. What a treat to watch...
