From Amazon.com For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and The London Boys Choir. This single disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs (a deluxe, double-disc edition is also available), with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emily Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs -- which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver's Carlotta. --Jerry McCulley

The Phantom... August 9, 2005 Me (Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love the music. I didnt realise, however, that this cd is the entire movie, not just the music. It is rather annoying to skip parts of the tracts to get past the talking, but I still like it.

Oh man this is one helll of a great cd... I love Gerard Butler singing the phantom... you can hear all the nuances and emotions that the phantom has... I have been listeming to the original London version for years, I heard the canadian version which was ok but that one... That One takes the cake.... I love it... I am going to buy the Dvd no questions asked... I love it so much!
Is this what you wanted to see? January 29, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Yes! I love this Cd with a burning passion. I loved the movie as well. I like this version of the Phantom the most. The OLC is good but I have always like the Canadian version better anyways. The movies outdoes them all! I don't care what anyone says but Gerard Butler can sing! And he can sing damn well. His voice moved me to tears and sent shudders through my body. This phantom is incredibly moving and I agree with and love the direction that the movie took. Bravo! Emmy Rossum, where can I start with her? She is by far my most favourite Christine to date. Yes more than Sarah Brightman. She is incredibly emotional and finally, finally she is a Christine that shows me why and how much she loves Raoul. Patrick Wilson as Raoul was fantastic and I finally started to like Raoul because of him. If I could have one CD on a deserted island, this would be it. Can you tell I love it? Some of my fav moments:Phantom of the Opera- This song is just fantastic whoever sings it. Stranger than you dreamt it- The emotion that Gerry Butler put into this was great. I was moved by his performance here. Why So Silent- EXCELLENT! He creeps me out while still drawing me towards him. Well done Gerry. Journey to The Cemetry- I love the music here. The majority of it was written for the movie, if I am not mistaken except for the part with the violin. I love it. Twisted Every Way- I love how they decided to speak the first part of this, it adds a lot to the mood of the scene. And Raoul isn't treating Christine like an idiot like he does in the musical. This Raoul is much more caring. Point of No Return- this is incredibly sensual and it is my most favourite part of this cd and the movie. I can't wait for the DVD! Get this and you won't be disappointed.

The first time I saw this movie I was entranced. It was wonderful and I sat there mesmerized for what seemed like hours afterwards. The music filled my soul and the story touched my heart. I think that this soundtrack is 150% better than that featuring Sarah Brightman. Emmy Rossum's vocals are much more pure and not whiny as I find Brightman's to be. Gerard Butler also makes a very very very enticing Phantom. His voice makes me swoon. I reccomend this soundtrack to anyone who loves music and The Phantom of the Opera.
