1 out of 5 stars Pitiful ersatz Pirates of Penzance   September 2, 2005
B. Chandler (Arlington, Texas)
Mabel (Kristy McNicol) dreams of everything including the kitchen sink. br /In this dream Frederic (Christopher Atkins) must then decide between duty and honor. br / br /The film loosely based on then Pirates of Penzance has most of the good songs mixed up with junk songs like "Give Me a Happy Ending" many of the weird songs were by Terry Britten of whom wrote the them song for "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome". br / br /This film is filled with half baked skits and off color puns it is hard to watch this to the end. They threw in many unnecessary elements and then again they may have been necessary to mask the substandard dialog and boring skits. The ending is abrupt due to the fact that they deviated from the play and did not know how to wrap up the story. There is no chemistry among the actors and even Kristy sleepwalks through her part. br / br /Well if you can not think of anything original then corrupt a classic. br / br /

It is quite possible that The Pirate Movie can be singled out as the WORST movie ever made, but I don't care that it's a bad movie. Bad movies are usually a lot of fun and this one certainly is. Maybe it's pure nostalgia, maybe it's because I love Australian movies and maybe it's because there is nothing here that can offend anyone, unless the fact that Kristy McNichol spends most of the movie scantily clad offends you. (as it certainly doesn't offend me!!) Australian acting legend Bill Kerr is great as the Major General, and his line I'm older than the Beatles but I'm younger than the Rolling Stones always has me laughing. Ted Hamilton's turn as the Pirate King also deserves praise, who after ripping the sails as he desends them holding nothing but a dagger, turns to his put upon mistress and says sew that up love! giving the audience another throw away but very effective gag. As for the music, the film gives us a great mix of Gilbert Sullivan standards and 80's pop music, obviously the producers had a mind to appeal to older people as well as the ghetto blaster generation. Get a copy of this now, your kid's will love it, and you might have a chuckle or two yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait to get it in the mail!!!   January 23, 2004
Ann M. Villapiano (Mystic Island, NJ United States)
Just placed my order for The Pirate Movie and I can't wait for it to come in the mail!!!! I too watched this like crazy when I was 10...was it on HBO or Showtime, I forget now....but it was my favorite movie and I haven't seen it since I was a kid!! I did download some of the songs and it really took me back and I was surprised that the songs still sounded great!! I was totally in love with Chris Atkins and I loved him in the Blue Lagoon too. I even wrote to him when I was a kid and got an autographed picture of him in the mail!! Too bad I didn't hold on to it. :-( brGlad to know there are other Pirate Movie fans!!! We need to start a group or something!! brAnn

I used to rent this every time we'd go to the store when I was younger! Great movie ... a little cheesy, but that's what I like the most about it!
