From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits of IThe Little Mermaid/I in 1989 it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured a "magic" that had been dormant for 30 years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand", Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull and a flounder. The lyrics and music by song-writing team Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea").  Disney Adaptation of the Classic Hans Andersen Fairytale November 24, 2007

I love the fairy tales from Hans Christian Andersen, and "The Little Mermaid" is one of my favorite fairy tales from him. Like I said I like a little twist in a fairy story now and then; like the ending...the little sea princess gets her prince (it's a change from Andersen's original ending). br / br / Yes, I love this film . The animation and backgrounds are very beautiful and the characters are appealing,and also the casting is very good too; I love Ariel, she's one of my favorite Disney Princesses along with Cinderella Aurora from "Sleeping Beauty." Ariel's voice actress Jodi Benson has an excellent singing voice for the film; and also suits her character. And you know, it's kind of hard to choose which film version of the story is the best...I would this version and the Japanese anime version that was maded 14 years ago are the best versions (I'm not one to take sides you know).

This, in my opinion, is the movie that saved Disney from fading out of existence, as we know it. Before the `Little Mermaid' there had not been a blockbuster Disney animated feature for years (specifically not since the `Great Mouse Detective') while `Oliver and Company' was released the year prior to this it was following the old formula and was not, to my knowledge, particularly successful. br / br /'The Little Mermaid' revived the breathtaking beauty of the classic Disney films like `Sleeping Beauty' and `Snow White' with it's tale of innocence pursued by evil, and true love conquering all. The animation is pretty dated compared to Tarzan or Atlantis. But that's hardly the matter. The beauty of the film is its radiance, not in its drawings and colors. br / br /I'm very happy that this finally came out on disc and able to share this with my kids instead of constantly taking this out from the library. This is perhaps one of the top 10 animated films ever made, I find it has a much deeper heart than `Beauty and the Beast,' and although it signified the beginning of a brand new Disney Empire, I find that it also signified the end of it. A film like this can be imitated but it can never be duplicated. And animation has grown into a magnificence and technologically superior story telling medium. But what the `Little Mermaid' had, it's still to be re-captured, and that's a heart as big and as deep as the ocean. br / br /`The Little Mermaid' is defiantly for the whole family and is a gem on its own right. It stands alone as one of Disney's most enchanting modern creations for a new generation. It bears repeated viewing remarkably well, and the musical score is both original and entertaining with many different styles throughout. br /

When I was younger than today br /I watched this mermaid story br /Now here's a special DVD br /Restored in all its glory br / br /Way back in 1989 br /This movie ruled the roost br /It made a bundle round the world br /to give Disney a boost br / br /A love struck little mermaid br /Fell for a human prince br /She struck a deal to get some legs br /And she's been dancing since br / br /It wasn't very easy br /She only had three days br /To make him fall head over heels br /Or so the story says br / br /Her friends the Flounder and the crab br /Helped her under the sea br /They tried to make him kiss the girl br /So she could be happy br / br /Ursula the mean sea witch br /All tentacles and flab br /Tried her best to spoil the fun br /The mermaid's soul to grab br / br /The part she didn't bargain on br /Was the thing that they call love br /And when she overstepped her bounds br /The fates gave her a shove br / br /If you've got children of your own br /Or cousins, nephews, nieces br /Be sure to pick this up today br /And they'll be thrilled to pieces br / br / br / br /Amanda Richards

save your $ on ebay auctions and wait for the platinum series release. this version's sound is excellent (dolby 5.1), but the bland/dull colors is a big disappointment. poor visibility, below average clarity and very dark throughout the entire movie. i've seen better second generation VHS recordings. this being a classic Disney release, it deserves a new high definition transfer like Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King (outstanding DVD's).
