Great singing, wooden acting, 3.5 stars September 8, 2008 Canadian Lupus 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Anybody referring to this review should note that this is the first version of Lohengrin I have seen, and that I seek ultra-traditional renditions of Wagner's operas, i.e., that adhere absolutely faithfully to his stage directions. br / br /Wagner's ideal was a symbiotic combination of music, poetry and "dance" or movement. This version of Lohengrin is fine on the first two categories, but for me falls down rather on the latter. Paul Frey's singing is brilliant, but I have never seen such wooden "acting", simply abysmal, and really detracted from the opera. In addition, the level of animation by the entire cast seems rather staid; I think that Wagner's stage direction envisaged more movement and action than occurs on this set. br / br /This leads to another personal criticism. I purchased this version as it had been reviewed elsewhere as being very traditional in its interpretation and execution. The swan is hardly recognisable as such, and as for its disrobing at the end, this was far away from what Wagner depicted (and was in fact rather laughable). br / br /Apart from the above, this was good and enjoyable, and I would give it 3.5/5 br /
