La Verbena de La Paloma br / br /Traditionalists will probably get a shock but for those that can approach the zarauela without preconceptions it is great fun. THe staging has been radically updated but is colourfull and imaginative while remaining true to the spirit of the original composition. Most of the singers are probably not that well known outside Spain but there are some great voices and no real weak links. THe all Spanish cast were really enjoying themselves and as the conductor said in his interview he thought he would dislike being involved but really bought into the directors concept by opening night. Altogether great fun and thoroughly recommended
