Amazon.com Essential Video Few early rockers were more gifted or less honored in their prime than the late Roy Orbison, whose vaulting tenor and vulnerable love songs conjured heartbreak and desire with operatic intensity. This 1987 concert special, originally broadcast on Showtime, came two decades after Orbison had retreated from pop's front lines, yet neither Orbison nor his music coasts on mere nostalgia: in every respect, IA Black and White Night/I survives as a triumphant performance and a superb video production, as well as a first-rate retrospective of Orbison's hits.p Filmed in black and white against the streamlined art deco stage of the since-demolished Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, the concert is buoyed by a remarkable cast of A-list Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists. Under the direction of producer T-Bone Burnett, the stage band thus includes Jackson Browne, Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley's fabled late '60s and early '70s touring band. That astonishing lineup is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborate--it's evident that those superstars came to honor Orbison, not upstage him, resulting in a gratifying cohesion to the performances. p Orbison himself sounds as powerful as ever, his soaring falsetto cresting as dramatically as it did on the studio versions of the hits that inevitably dominate. Those songs meanwhile confirm that his blue chip admiration society came as much for the caliber of his writing as for his ravishing voice: if he remains best known for the jaunty come-on of "Pretty Woman," Orbison was first and foremost a rock balladeer, capable of bringing lumps to our throats with such classics as "Crying" and "Only the Lonely," or conjuring romantic trances through such gentle charmers as "Dream Baby." On this night, he handled all of them with fervor and finesse. I--Sam Sutherland/I

Pure Orbison Bliss March 6, 2008 B. Chandler (Arlington, Texas) One of the main strengths of this films that it is not peppered with dialog and odd celebrities that evidently never saw Roy, describing his life and works. br / br /The presentation, recorded live at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, moves quickly from one song to the next. And even though the visuals are good it is the music that makes this well worth the purchase. If you have a favorite it is here. Songs are more than disembodied entertainment. As with most people they bring back memories or create new memories that are associated with them. We can see that they are more than just songs to Roy also. My favorite is "It's over". br /

This has to be the best RR music DVD I have ever heard. Unbeatable value.... with a Bonus CD included......Great DVD transfer in B/W adds magic to the vintage Rock sound. Incredible guitar by legendary James Burton plus so many other music/greats all on stage with Roy Orbison...performing all his classic songs.
A must have for any collection September 7, 2005 Bob Kay (Midland, Ontario Canada) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Clearly one of the best music DVD's in my collection - sound quality is phenomenal. Performance is flawless...absolutely flawless. Every musician plays their heart out here...the on stage talent as good as it gets. You know, I'm not a huge fan of Roy, but this DVD is very, very special and Pretty Woman at the end is just so over the top - it will blow you away unlike anything you've ever heard and watched before!

Wonderful collaboration of musicians and singers. All his hits are here, 'only the lonely', 'dream baby', 'blue bayou', 'running scared', 'in dreams', 'crying', 'it's over', 'pretty woman' etc. You can see the admiration from the crowd and people on stage for this legend. This dvd was a beautiful gift to his fans before his death. The black and white was a nice touch as it gives the concert a nostalgia look. The performers contribute nicely to the concert but allow Orbison to be centre stage. Roy's music timing is flawless. Thought I might get sick of hearing 'pretty woman' after so many times but I was wrong, this live version gave it life. The only problem I had was I found the dvd a little expensive ($34. Cdn), but shop around. This dvd is still worth it. The sound is unbelievable. Get this dvd and let the violins, his words and voice melt your heart.
