Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
A wimpy remake of an already anemic movie (the 1947 Rita Hayworth vehicle iDown to Earth/i), this glitzy musical from 1980 improbably stars Olivia Newton-John as a heavenly muse sent here to help open a roller-derby disco. Gene Kelly is mixed up in this well-meaning but goofy effort to fuse nostalgia with late-'70s glitter-ball trendiness, and he looks just plain silly. Directed by Robert Greenwald, the film doesn't even work as decent kitsch. i--Tom Keogh/i

4 out of 5 stars Xanadu - Magical Musical Edition   July 1, 2008
Dennis Orton (ontario canada)
After taking much abuse during it's 80's theatrical release and being largely ignored in the 90's it has taken a smash hit broadway musical to help this film get the attention it deserves. br / br /Despite having a positively goofy storyline (Zeus' daughter inspires an artist to open a roller disco) this film is purely entertaining and guaranteed to raise a smile in even the most jaded of viewers. Olivia Newton-John just radiates joy throughout the movie and screen legend Gene Kelly just seems to be having a grand old time whether hoofing it with ONJ or roller skating at the completed Xanadu. Sure Michael Beck seems a little stiff but it no way hurts the flick. br / br /This recent DVD features the original trailer (which admittedly was not very good and could have contributed to the films mediocre grosses) and a terrific new feature that has interviews with many behind the scene talents although sadly the principal actors seemed left out. They also missed the opportunity to do a feature on the hit musical. The coupon for a performance is nice but it would have been nice to get the film makers response to the tongue in cheek broadway show. br / br /The real major bonus on this issue is the soundtrack the features all of the songs from the previous CD (but sadly still not including Drum dreams and Fool) and is a great addition for any fans who did not have it. br / br /This DVD/CD set is terrific for either long time fans or people who have never seen the flick and have only watched the new musical. br / br /

4 out of 5 stars Dazzling   April 10, 2008
Fabien (Nova Scotia)
What can I say that could make someone watch this movie? First of all, "Dazzling", "Mesmerizing" and "Fun". br / br /Yes, it was 1980 but I can think of a lot of movies today that are just plain, crappy. For one, I don't think "Chicago" deserved the Oscar for Best Picture. br / br /Xanadu is a fantasy, pure and simple. The songs lift you up and the visuals are enchanting. I have yet to see the DVD but I do have a VHS copy that I will not get rid of. br / br /I saw this movie 3 times upon its initial release. I had just graduated from High School and was infatuated with Olivia Newton-John. She could sing or do no wrong. She did not disappoint. br / br /After reading the more favorable reviews (that outweighed the bad), I will order the DVD. I should have a long time ago. I own every album Olivia ever recorded as well as movies she has co-starred in. Has anyone seen "Sordid Lives"? It's a hoot! br / br /Enjoy this movie. Don't overanalyze it! br /

5 out of 5 stars A musical-fantasy like no other   March 31, 2008
Frances L. Arsenault (Nanaimo, BC, Canada)
I have watched the trailer plus clip for this film on the net, and I had gotten curious; So I'd ordered the film and after I had watched the WHOLE film I love it! A musical-fantasy like no other, but I am shocked by the negativity towards it. br / br /The film is about a frustrated artist named Sonny who dreams of fame beyond his dead-end job (he hates painting large, display-versions of record albums); Then he met and fell in love with a mysterious girl named Kira, who was really Terpsichore - The muse of dance, a daughter of Zeus Mnemosyne - The goddess of memory (those were the people whose heavenly voices belong to in the scene where Sonny tries to bring Kira/Terpsichore back with him); I studied Mythology you know. I love a really good musical, they've great songs in them; My favorite musical scenes are "Dancin'" a wonderful blend of the 40s and 80s, and "Don't Walk Away" an animated sequence animated by none other than Don Bluth, and I had listened to that song (Don't Walk Away) I cried...Really! I cried! I haven't cried since like...months ago or so; Well overall an awesome musical to enjoy. br / br /

5 out of 5 stars Un classique du genre   February 28, 2006
Bien sur le scenario manque un peu de punch, mais les chansons et la musique sont tres bonne. Quand ont commence a entendre I'm Alive ont se laisse emporter dans le film jusqu'a la chanson Xanadu.

2 out of 5 stars Contrived,   October 4, 2005
B. Chandler (Arlington, Texas)
Sonny is an album painter that just can't get inspired. Enter Kira (Olivia Newton-John) muse one each. She inspires Sonny just as 40 years earler she inspired Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly). So sunny and Danny go off to build Xanadu. There Olivia gets to sing what she does best with the slow light voiced songs as Magic and Xanadu. They get mixed in with qasi 80 stomp and a dash of big band hoopla. br / br / br /This was a vehicle for Olivia in her hay day allowing her to try a sound sampler from different genres. They were lucky to get Gene Kelly as he was the only thing to make the film tolerable. To bad they could not find someone real to play Sonny instead of Michael Beck who played a Highway thug in "The Hard Ride" (1971). The film has lost a great deal of its pizzazz over the years and the muse has failed to amuse future generations. br / br /You may want to see the original instead "Down to Earth" (1947) with Rita Hayworth and Larry Parks. br / br /
