This video is the sequel to the beloved children's book and video iAnne of Green Gables/i. It continues the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong young orphan in 1890s Canada, whose hot temper matches her red hair. iAnne of Green Gables/i told of Anne's adoption by an elderly brother and sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and Matthew Cuthbert, and her childhood adventures in the idyllic village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. iAnne of Avonlea/i takes up the story soon after Matthew's death, when Anne has graduated from college. It follows her struggles and adventures as an aspiring writer and English teacher in a private school on the mainland. Girls seven and older, as well as adults, will enjoy this intelligent and beautifully made film, first shown on PBS. It's filled with themes parents can discuss with their daughters--including self-reliance, generosity, and perseverance. It also gives a realistic portrayal of the situation for women during this historical period, through characters that are multifaceted and human. Anne's struggle to find her voice as a writer, to handle difficult people maturely, to stay optimistic despite setbacks, and to nurture her students are both thought provoking and entertaining. Girls will also enjoy Anne's romantic travails, as she tries to decide between two suitors: her childhood friend Gilbert, and a rich, handsome, and mysterious widower. The film is beautifully filmed, and the costumes and settings portray an idyllic time and place. The cast is excellent. Megan Follows as the spirited Anne and Dewhurst as the gruff but tender Marilla give especially fine performances. I--Elisabeth Keating/I

5 out of 5 stars " SARA " BY Dorota Silaj is a sister of Anne of green gables   October 21, 2006

Im so excited that the book by Dorota Silaj, "Sara", will be made into a movie. br /Readers like the book. The road leads through wide meadows, tall bunches of grass, and colorful wild flowers. The suns rays come from the sky and warm things up on their way. Readers can travel on carriage or on food, and they dont want to give up. Sara is a distant cousin of Anne of Green Gables both being located on Prince Edwards Island. br /The novel imparts the greatest values, like empathy, love, and sensitivity to the nature. The values are stronger than some of the other short lived trends in literature, such as turpism or empty streams of words. In Sara, words have their meaning, the psychological level is deep, and characters are full. br /Two teenagers: a girl and a boy, and also a wealthy, elegant woman, find happiness. The book offers adventure, reflection, and the warm rays of the sun. br /I recommended the book. I cant wait for the movie. br / br /Danuta Blaszak br /

If you are an international customer and you choose Standard International Shipping for your purchases in order to minimise cost and avoid additional taxes and duties at the country of destination, beware ordering from Amazon Canada. They have been known to disregard shipping instructions and send items by Priority International Courier even if you haven't selected that method, which in some countries leads to the imposition of additional taxes and duties on the arrival of the package.

5 out of 5 stars It's Very Good!   January 29, 2004

Anne of Avonlea, also called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel is a wonderful movie and just as good as the first movie! In this movie Anne leaves home to take a job teaching English to some snotty rich girls who give her a hard time but she soon wins them over and soon Morgan Harris the father of one of her students falls for Anne and courts her. The father played by Frank Converse is quite a bit older then Anne and my aunt kept rooting for him but having read the books and knowing who Anne's true love is I of course rooted for her beloved Gilbert. Megan Follows once again gave a wonderful performance as Anne and I highly recommend this movie and also the first movie. The only movie in this series that I was disappointed in was the third movie the Continuing story but the first two movies are very good! I could be wrong but I don't recall the character Morgan Harris being in the books and I think he may have been an added character to the movie. I do think that the actor playing him was quite handsome in a rugged sort of way but Jonathan Crombie who played Gilbert was cute too.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful   November 27, 2003

I watched ANNE OF AVONLEA again last night; it is beautiful beyond words. I am particularly moved by the title character's kindness and her ability to touch and even transform the lives of those around her. One of my favorite episodes in the movie involves the relationship between Anne and Miss Katherine Brooke, the headmistress of the school at which Anne teaches English literature. Miss Brooke is a bitter woman who is rude to Anne at first; Anne does not like Miss Brooke much either but tries to be kind to her anyway. Finally, Miss Brooke accepts Anne's invitation to stay at Avonlea over the summer, and in Avonlea she finally begins to find peace and to accept Anne's friendship. All of this happens because Anne does not really believe that anyone is beyond redemption, even an embittered person like Miss Brooke. These scenes are made all the more efffective by the superb acting of Megan Follows as Anne and of Rosemary Dunsmore as Miss Brooke. There is so much more to say about ANNE OF AVONLEA; it has so many interesting and important characters and so many great themes. I don't exaggerate when I say that the movie has changed my life.
