From Amazon.com Tony Kushner's prize-winning play IAngels in America/I became the defining theatrical event of the 1990s, an astonishing mix of philosophy, politics, and vibrant gay soap opera that summed up the Reagan era for an entire generation of theater-goers. Post-9/11 would seem to be too late for a film version--philosophy and politics don't always age well--but this 2003 HBO adaptation, ably directed by Mike Nichols (IThe Graduate/I), provides a time capsule of the '80s and reveals the deep emotional subcurrents that will give the play lasting power. p The story centers around Prior Walter (Justin Kirk) and Louis Ironson (Ben Shenkman), a gay couple that falls apart when Prior grows ill as a result of AIDS. But cancer is not the only thing invading Prior's life: He begins to have religious visions of an angel (Emma Thompson, ISense and Sensibility/I) announcing that he is a prophet. Louis, who doesn't cope well with disease and suggestions of mortality, leaves and starts a relationship with Joe Pitt (Patrick Wilson), a closeted Mormon who works for Roy Cohn (Al Pacino, IDog Day Afternoon/I)--the real-life right-wing lawyer, notorious for his ruthless behind-the-scenes machinations. Add in Joe's depressed and hallucinating wife Harper (Mary Louise Parker, IFried Green Tomatoes/I), his determined but open-minded mother Hannah (Meryl Streep, IAdaptation/I), a fierce drag queen/nurse named Belize (Jeffrey Wright, IBasquiat/I, reprising his celebrated performance from the Broadway production), and you've still only begun to discover the wealth of characters and storylines in Kushner's ambitious work. p The powerhouse cast (also featuring James Cromwell, Michael Gambon, and Simon Callow) is uniformly superb. The script has its weaknesses--some of the fantastic elements, including Prior's journey to Heaven towards the end, fall flat--but even what doesn't work is bristling with ideas and a ferocious desire to capture human existence in this time and place. I--Bret Fetzer/I

Simply the best movie I've seen in years.... July 16, 2004 E. Letourneau (Oakland, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
HBO should've released this movie in movie theaters. I saw it at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco and it was a fantastic experience. Seeing it on TV is great, but.... Oh well, just enjoy! The acting, story, and filmography are amazing.
awesome July 16, 2004 I started to watch the series using the on demand feature of our cable company and then it went away before I got to watch the whole thing. I can't wait to get the dvd so I can finish watching it and have it to watch again and again. Having been around when this was all going down makes this series really hit home. The acting is superb as are the special effects.
beyond wonderful June 22, 2004 Jacquelyn Bailey (Schriesheim, Germany) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If they had released this movie in the theaters, there would not have been enough Academy awards to give to the writer, the director, and the wonderful cast. Who should get Best Actor? Al Pacino as the loathesome Roy Cohn or Justin Kirk as the dying Prior Walter? Who should get Best Actress? Meryl Streep as the practical, compassionate Mormon housewife, or Emma Thompson as the beautiful, terrifying angel? This series had me riveted to the TV set. I could not do anything but watch. Get this movie. You owe it to yourself to witness one of the major artistic events of the decade.
absolutly amazing piece of thought provoking art June 10, 2004 i have never ever seen something so amazing! this film so elegantly combines so many genres and themes into one. the film has it all - meaning, emotion, love, death, sex, drugs, money, politics, religion and much more. sometimes it is mildly funny (there are also some hilarious scenes that make it look like a sketch show) at others it is amazingly profound and deep with beautiful language, and other times it is just blatently straightforward. fantastic camera work and lighting i really liked how everything looks. this has just become my favorite show. it is based around the lives of gay people, but don't let that get in your way of watching this amazing film because you are missing out on a treat of a lifetime! but be prepared - this is not your average blockbuster movie, it frequently evokes thinking and opportunity for discussion, perfect for watching with friends. often sad themes but ends with great hope and positivity.
A BIG surprise!!!!!!!!!!!! May 26, 2004 John Whitley (Nyack, NY United States) First saw "Angels" advertised as I drove down New York City's West Side Highway and saw a HUGE billboard ad. Was a little bit cynical about how good it would be. Watched it on HBO, and what can I say???? BRILLIANT!!!!!!brThe performances, direction, cinematography blew me away.brHad only seen Part Two performed on stage, so was intrigued to see the "whole thing".brEASY to say that Pacino, Streep, Emma Thompson were amazing, but SO were everybody involved in this production.brIF it had been theatrically released, it would have SWEPT the Oscars.brBuy, WATCH, and appreciate sheer brilliance!!!
