The famous Dame Judy Dench carries this series with all the skill and humour of the best of the world's great comediennes, while supported by a less well known, but still very good cast. If you are a fan of British comedy, this series is surely Number One. The dry wit is top notch and it is well produced and directed. pFor example, the lines without words that Dame Judy Dench delivers, where a simple look from her has the viewer in stitches, are fantastic; she is extremely skilled and hilariously funny with seemingly little effort. The supporting cast follows close behind with very believable characterizations. Superb acting all around.pThe series is about a middle aged couple, divorced and widowed respectively, who meet again after having lost contact as young lovers. He - Lionel - is a writer and they meet as he is, by accident, using the secretarial service that She - Jean - is running as a small business. The story is vaguely centred around the developing love affairs, first of Lionel and Jean, and then later of Jean's daughter, Jean's secretary, and Lionel's publisher - and I will not disclose any more about what happens!pThe love affairs are however only part of the story. It also includes many other aspects of ordinary life with a humorous twist! The writers of the series deal with happenings of 'the ordinary life', but they have given it many humorous twists that help us to laugh at ourselves while we laugh at the characters on the screen. At times, it can also be very romantic and I am sure it will appeal to many young lovers of middle age or older.pAlthough outings occur in most episodes, the stage setting is often the living room or the kitchen, but you never feel that this restricts the plot. pWell worth the money!
