From Amazon.com
The charm, the zaniness, the corny jokes, the showbiz cliches--every element of IThe Muppet Show/I holds up 30 years after Jim Henson's legendary variety series' debut season. Well, perhaps not everything: Today's younger viewers might have a hard time placing some of IThe Muppet Show/I's then-guest stars, such as Florence Henderson or Ruth Buzzi. But then, the IShow/I's real celebrities are perennial icons Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the... whatever, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and the rest of the Muppets' harried, well-meaning family of entertainers. p ISeason One/I finds the show pretty much in the basic shape longtime fans will remember: A musical introduction followed by backstage chaos, another musical number, a sketch, a scene with the guest star, and so on. A half-hour episode can fly by pretty quickly, but it's interesting to note that the series hadn't quite found its familiar tone through much of the first year. A reliance on too many disposable verbal jokes and redundant, so-so material for sketch fodder ultimately gives way to more creative premises and the development of key relationships between characters. By the final half-dozen episodes in the first season, IThe Muppet Show/I is truly cooking. Season highlights include Kermit's confession to guest Juliet Prowse that he always wanted to be a dancer, and Prowse's comparison of the little green superstar to Robert Redford. Joel Grey does a cabaret-style act for a roomful of Muppets and is later outraged when Kermit's introduction of the actor proves so thorough there is nothing left for the latter to say. Rita Moreno proves quite game in a funny piece, set in a French cafe, in which her dance with a man-size Muppet turns from romantic to table-smashing violent. Harvey Korman plays bumbling ringmaster Maurice the Magnificent, easily the worst animal trainer in history. Phyllis Diller bats out shameless one-liners ("I sang 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,' and it fell on me"), and Vincent Price toys with his own horror film image by playing a ghoul who turns into a maudlin orchestra conductor at midnight. The Muppets season one is finally on DVD! I've really enjoyed watching these old episodes! The sound and visual quality are clear! The only downside is, apparently, some of the original footage is gone, but I haven't noticed. Who cares? The Muppets are on DVD!! For those who are new to the Muppets, the humor is for adults. Children can enjoy watching the Muppets and the dazzling performances however! br / br /Includes pilot and promotion wheel when the show was being pitched. The case design is pretty nice.

The Muppet Show is finally available on Dvd after years of waiting and it was worth the wait! The restored sound and video is complemented by great extras including a gag reel, one of the two original pilot episodes and the pitch reel sent to CBS (it is slightly edited though)pAll 24 episodes of the first season hwew and include the UK skits edited back into the show. In response to the other review of this set: not all the episodes are edited. 6 songs had to be removed due to licensing concerns and they are:pStormy Weather (Joel Grey Episode) Sung by Wayne and WandabrGone With The Wind (Jim Nabors Episode) Sung by Jim NaborsbrThe Danceros (Jim Nabors Episode) Sung by The DancerosbrAll Of Me (Paul Williams Episode) Sung by Two MonstersbrOld Fashioned Way (Charles Aznavour) Sung by Charles Aznavour with MildredbrYou've Got A Friend (Vincent Price Episode) Sung by Vincent PricepSo 5 episodes have small cuts, but the rest of them are intact.pOverall these small edits don't affect the caliber of this box set and I would reccomend it as an excellent purchase for people of all ages.

Yes there are some skits missing, they replaced the US only skit, with the UK only skit, as it was what Henson prefered, in most cases the UK only Skit was a song by Rawlf, and since I LOVE his songs I am HAPPY to have them, thou I would have liked it to include both the US and UK skits, but im happy with it as it is. 5 stars if it had both.

Curious how a special edition DVD box set has stuff left out of it. Could it be that the complete edition, uncut, will be available soon?brThe problem with the box set became apparent when I watched the Jim Nabors episode and notice his first song number had been cut. After watching the whole thing I noticed the same thing on a number of other episodes. After checking www.kermitage.com to get episode information, I found something very interesting: all of the episodes had original scenes cut (some of the best by the way) to make room for the UK Skits. Restored and remastered? What about re-written and, in my case, ripped off! I wanted the original first season, and this isn't it. If, like me, you are a diehard Muppets fan who wanted the original Muppet Show as it was first broadcasted but you aren't a collection freak, don't waste your time on this box set. You will be diappointed, and there undoubtably will be another box set of original editions after they've made their money from the special edited cut and re-written edition. Save your money for then, but only after you do the homework and find out for sure it's not another rip off.
