From Amazon.com Perennially one of the WB's highest-rated series, IGilmore Girls/I hit its creative high point to date with its stellar fifth season, which started out with young Rory (Alexis Bledel) feeling the fallout of doing something terribly non-Rory-like: sleeping with Dean (Jared Padalecki), her married ex-boyfriend. Rory's indulgence in adultery put, for the first time, a serious, sharp wedge in her relationship with her mother, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), who was both shocked by her daughter's behavior and worried Rory would repeat the mistakes Lorelai made at her age. But while Rory jetted off to Europe with her grandmother (Kelly Bishop) for the summer, Lorelai finally got her relationship with diner owner Luke (Scott Patterson) into a serious groove, starting with an official (and incredibly sweet) first date and others that involved, if you can believe it, a Swedish IPippi Longstocking/I movie. And as Lorelai navigated romantic terrain in Stars Hollow (terrain that of course did not run smooth), Rory found life more complex in her second year at Yale, as her relationship with Dean became increasingly strained. Not only that, she found her attention turned towards preppy Logan (Matt Czurchy), a spoiled rich kid who represented everything Rory couldn't stand--and was of course immediately attracted to. Little did Rory know that Logan's entrance into her life, and her interaction with his family, would be the catalyst for one of the most momentous decisions she would ever make. p With this season of IGilmore Girls/I, creative forces Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino finally found a way to make the Stars Hollow-Yale dichotomy work perfectly, as each location still stood alone but had decided repercussions on the other. Gone were freshman-year anxieties for Rory and in their place were more adult romantic concerns as well as a class consciousness that, for the first serious time, found Rory on the side of the haves and not the have-nots. While the Rory-Dean drama played itself out nicely and succinctly, it was the devilish Logan who lit a fire underneath this Gilmore girl; the episode "You Jump, I Jump, Jack" was a lovely twist on the '30s romantic comedies that found rich folk at play with words and deeds. Bledel started to fully blossom as Rory grew from ingenue to leading lady, and she was matched peerlessly by Graham, whose passion, anger, stubbornness, and ravishing beauty all came to a head in "Wedding Bell Blues," which featured her two greatest nemeses: her mother and Rory's dad, Christopher (David Sutcliffe). The show's trademark eccentricities were all in place--including a IPulp Fiction/I party and an elementary school production of IFiddler on the Roof/I, among other things--but it mined the best drama of its run with the season's last four episodes, which found Rory's confidence shaken to the core. To give any of the proceedings away would spoil the drama, but suffice it to say you will be glued to the TV for this season's final four hours; it's IGilmore Girls/I at its phenomenal best. The Best Season... January 3, 2006 I do agree with the others that the packaging is getting rather cheap (is Warner Bros. trying to cut down costs??). The quality of the show however, is getting better as Rory grows older and her mother finally dates Luke! Great show, buy it if you haven't. Can't wait to buy season six.
Great Show, BAD Packaging! December 31, 2005 I'm inclined to agree with some previous reviewers in saying the show itself just keeps getting better and better! I also can't wait to get season 6, but the packaging has most decidedly gone downhill since season 2. So far, the only one I've really had trouble with is season 4, which I sent back, only to receive another inferior package; disappointing, to say the least. I also echo the plea for the return of the Gilmorisms booklet. The lower rating reflects only thhe packaging.
Fabulous Season!! December 30, 2005 Renee Lam (Canada) I'm super late in writing this review but you know what.. I haven't had the time to actually watch it until lately. I always pre order but end up watching it later on..so I recently finished season 4 and I have one more episode of season 5... truthfully, i don't want to watch it.. because i can't wait for season 6!!brthis is ultimately the best season of gilmore girls i have ever watched.. i like season 2.. but season 5 kicks ass.. rory and logan.. luke and lorelai.. everything works out..pya i have to admit that the packaging is cheap. the stupid tape that holds the plastic sleeves came off and all my cds went to hell.. but it's ok no biggie..anyyyways..pbest season ever!!
How much cheaper can these sets become? December 15, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I absolutely adore the Gilmore Girls! The show is incredibly well-written, the pace is bang on, the cultural references are fantastic. It is an exceptional show that will stand up to the test of time!pIt is too bad that the same cannot be said about the actual packaging. The first two season sets are truly impressive. Then, in the third and fourth seasons, the PTB decided to make the plastic sleeves cheaper, and thus more easy to break (which happened in both cases I received before having even opened them!). Now to add insult to injury, the PTB have cheapened the fifth season set even more by omitting the Gilmore-isms and instead including a sheet referring you to the WEBSITE where you can look them up there!pAre they serious? We pay some $50 for these sets and now they can't even give us the stupid booklets? I can't wait to see the sixth (and eventual seventh) season set. It will probably be a plain white envelope with some DVDs jiggling around inside it.pShame on the production team for ruining an otherwise beyond reproach show.
BEWARE! Highly Enjoyable December 14, 2005 J. Toteda (Vancouver, BC, Canada) You know, I'm a little late in reviewing this season of Gilmore Girls, and all of the previous reviewers are right on the money, but I thought I share in the Gilmore love fest here. pThere are so many monumental scenes and occasions in this season that make it such a must-see and in my case a must re-watch over and over! The season builds-up momentum and really hit's stride when marking it's 100th episode anniversary, (that was a great episode) and I have to agree with many, Lauren Graham deserves Emmy consideration! Nonetheless, many Luke and Lorelai fans will adore this season because the best stuff really comes from them. Emily is meaner then ever, Paris is just as nuts as she always is and yes, Rory has a new love interest, there's just one problem he doesn't commit well. pHonestly the last episode of this season is the best of the series so far. I can't wait to watch them all over again, because I know there will be something I'll notice that I didn't catch before. pIf your unsure of investing in the Gilmore Girl sets then watch an episode of season 6 airing now, which is turning out to be, believe it or not, even better then season 5! It's already a shoe in for a 7th season and deserves all the praise it's getting, and all the praise the writers are getting for making us the fans fall in love with these characters all over again. There is no doubt in my mind that this series will eventually end with just as much whit, spunk, charm, warmth, and popularity as it did when it began and when that sad day comes I will have a complete set of one of the most fabulously crafted shows to ever grace our TV sets. Again, I am amazed at how these actors and writers make us feel so much in such a short amount of time. Time now, we can relive again and again whenever we please.
