From Amazon.com Andrew Davies isn't much of household name in the U.S., but he's the king of the BBC mini-series. His skillfully adapted scripts for IPride Prejudice/I (the beloved Colin Firth version) and many, many more are peerless examples of classic novels done right--cunningly edited and shaped to let all the rich emotion and sharp intelligence spill over with zip and vigor. IBleak House/I is no exception; it's one of the best Dickens adaptations to date. The mini-series form allows Dickens' panoramic view, brimming with eccentric characters and complex turns of plot, to sprawl out without losing an iota of suspense or momentum. Two innocent young orphans (Patrick Kennedy and Carey Mulligan) are the potential heirs to a fortune, but their fates are snarled in a monumental legal battle known as Jarndyce and Jarndyce. But the heart of the story is another orphan, Esther Summerson (Anna Maxwell Martin), whose mysterious parentage proves to be intertwined with the fate of the Jarndyce wards and the aloof Lady Dedlock (Gillian Anderson, IThe X-Files/I). Dickens' story twines through an excoriating vision of the legal system to heartbreaking domestic drama to a murder investigation to near-Gothic horror, all broken into utterly delicious half-hour segments (after the hour-long opening episode). Martin is utterly beguiling, homely at one moment and luminous the next; Anderson's grippingly eerie and brittle performance will delight her fans. But to single out anyone seems absurd, because every character--from the vicious lawyer Tulkinghorn (Charles Dance, IWhite Mischief/I) to the foppish parasite Skimpole (Nathaniel Parker, IThe Inspector Lynley Mysteries/I) to the simpering clerk Guppy (Burn Gorman)--is intricately drawn, all hitting a mesmerizing balance between caricature and stark emotional honesty. IBleak House/I demonstrates that humor, pathos, and social criticism can all be contained in one wonderfully entertaining package. I--Bret Fetzer/I

Sensational! September 8, 2008 Hannah (Hamilton, Ontario) Andrew Davies has done it again. This film is captivating from beginning to end (and it's a long one). You will not regret adding this film to your classical library!
awesome August 23, 2008 Poetkitty (Victoria, British Columbia) I can only echo what others have written. Wonderful characters with whom you can truly connect and some slightly over-the-top ones (of course! this is Dickens!} Mr. Smallweed and Mr. Guppy - gotta love 'em. This has it all - great characters, story, cinematography, language, location....it makes you laugh and cry. What more could you want?
Oh so good May 22, 2007 T. P. (BC, Canada) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This one ranks up there with the likes of Pride Prejudice, North South, Our Mutual Friend, Wives Daughters and so forth. There was just the right amount of 'darkness' but not the whole movie, as to make it feel like one big bummer. Great characters, acting, costumes, plot twists. I was hesitant of Gillian Anderson being Lady Dedlock, until I googled her and read that she grew up in England and moved back to the US as a teen. That explained why she does the accent so well! I watched the whole series over a few night (it's nice and long but I still didn't want it to end) and then promptly started it again. Highly recommended!
Show is great; DVD is not March 26, 2007 Ruth (Canada) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
It's great... riveting, great acting, great screenplay, etc etc. It's one of the best series I have ever seen. I think everyone would enjoy it. br / br /But... BBC Video really dropped the ball with the design of the DVD case. They jammed three DVDs into a small case, and the release lever in the middle of the DVDs do not work properly. I actually broke one of the DVDs trying to get it out. Damn you, BBC Video! I borrowed it so now I have to lay out another $[] for a new one.
Bleak House: Bloody Brilliant !!! January 15, 2007 J. Tracey (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
There is a danger when Americans get thrust into British productions; whether they be live on stage or on film. IE: they can actually ruin wonderful pieces of work. Thankfully though, this is NOT the case here. Supplementing an extremely talented UK cast is Gillian Anderson, whose gaunt/ghost like appearances only add to this magnificent production. (and her accent comes across without the viewer questioning it's authenticity). For those who are only discovering Dickens or those who refuse to watch anything but the classic films made before 1960 I strongly suggest that you watch this 3 dvd set. I compare it to one of those good books you simply cannot put down (hmmmm... maybe like the Dickens novel itself) or... for those of a younger age: like trying to stop watching 24 on dvd. I am lucky enough to own a 61 inch widescreen tv which was made to show every square inch of the exquisitely filmed and acted drama. Charles Dance is EVIL beyond EVIL in this version and my favourite character by far... but also keep an eye open for Johnny Vegas; someone you would not want to share a drink with. Rent, borrow or better yet: BUY THIS DVD set: It's a keeper.
