From Amazon.com
Like a roller coaster ready to fly off its rails, IVan Helsing/I rockets to maximum velocity and never slows down. Having earned blockbuster clout with IThe Mummy/I and IThe Mummy Returns/I, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (Isans/I credits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilled Iand/I exhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, Iever/I bore you. A sequel is virtually guaranteed. I--Jeff Shannon/I

5 out of 5 stars An awesome Steampunk action/horror film   October 24, 2008
Frances L. Arsenault (Nanaimo, BC, Canada)
This is an awesome Steampunk action/horror film about vampire/monster hunter named Gabriel Van Helsing (X-Men's Hugh Jackman). He is based on the character Abraham Van Helsing, created by Bram Stoker; of course he was made younger to appeal to a more modern era, and his name was changed from Abraham to Gabriel. Gabriel works at what-it-looks like a 19th century paranormal secret service in the Vatican; but oftens complains to the Cardinal Jinette that he is a murderer, killing monsters which were once good, decent people. However, he continues to do his job so that innocent people can no longer be harmed by the monsters who terrorize the world. Gabriel also had lost his memory, and has only clues to his history and true identity. br / br / In the film Van Helsing (along with Friar Carl) was sent from Rome to a protect and aid a gypsy princess/monster hunter named Anna and to help in her family's quest in slaying Dracula. Anna, who is very bullheaded, didn't want to accept his help. However, before she had the chance to formally object, the village was viciously attacked by the three brides of Dracula: Aleera, Verona, and Marishka. Anna fled, knowing that the brides had come for her to finish killing off her family. This left Van Helsing fighting Marishka (the blonde birde), whom he shot with arrows with holy water on them and killed her. After that Van Helsing gains Anna's trust and she decides to work with him and Carl. As Van Helsing and Anna continue on working together they both realize the love they have for each other (I love the shipping between them). br / br / As I said many times, I don't have a favorite scene, because I love the WHOLE film, it is an awesome Steampunk action/horror film!

4 out of 5 stars one wild ride   February 2, 2008

i thoroughly enjoyed myself throughout this movie.the basic Gist of the br /story is this:Van Helsing takes on Count Dracula,The Wolfman, and the br /Frankenstein Monster in one adventure.what more could you ask for?this br /is one fast paced thrill ride, with spectacular action and fight br /sequences.Hugh Jackman is Van Helsing, and makes the character larger br /than life.Kate Beckinsale is Anna Valerious, whose family has for br /centuries tried to rid the world of evil.she teams up with Van br /Helsing,and the sparks fly.there is no denying the chemistry between br /the two.i wouldn't call this a scary movie, but it is very intense at br /times,and a bit morbid.it doesn't take itself seriously though, which br /works in this case.for me,Van Helsing is a 4/5

3 out of 5 stars Good Movie   October 12, 2006
A. Chaney (Lincoln,NE)
I like the opening in black and white! If you want a good superhero chases monsters kind of movie then buy this one. It's not bad at all. Matter of fact I like the movie over all. But I thought it annoying in the special features how they showed Kate Beckinsale frothing at the mouth over hugh jackman and making the comments about him (She is married to Len Wiseman right?), thats the world for ya. As well as Hugh Jackman showing off to her. I dont want to see that in special features of a movie I just bought. Good thing she wont be in the second one! Maybe we will see Hugh Jackman showing off to one of the creature from the black lagoons wives!! Down boy!!, she's got fish virus!! Most notable qoute from the special features, "Ladies and Gentleman, I present to you, VAN HALEN!"

Can you say: AMAZING?!!!? This must be one of the best SFX movies ever made. It flat out rocks! Sure, some people say the plot is corny, the characters are corny, but, those who say that, I disagree with very, very strongly.br The movie's pace is good, and the story flows well. The characters: Van Helsing, Dracula, Frankenstein... they're good twists from the originals, and, come to think of it, I like this version of Dracula ten times better than numero uno. Trust me, you will love this movie. So, what are you waiting for? BUY IT! NOW!!!!!
