If the phrase "Canadian action thriller" doesn't send you running to the video store, IBon Cop Bad Cop/I is hoping to change your mind. When a body is found straddling the Ontario/Quebec border, a detective from each province must partner up to solve the case. Naturally, in the grand tradition of buddy-cop movies, one (Colm Feore, IThirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould/I) is straight-laced and by the book while the other (Patrick Huard, ILes Boys/I) is a chain-smoking loose cannon. The mystery escalates as more bodies pile up, all connected to the world of hockey (and based on real-life hockey figures) and all marked with mysterious tattoos. Gags about French vs. English pile up as well, along with other Canadian in-jokes, but despite that, IBon Cop Bad Cop/I is accessible and entertaining, a preposterous, over-the-top blend of ILethal Weapon/I and ISaw/I. It has all the classic elements--an eccentric coroner, women throwing themselves at the heroes, a brawl in a bar, a time-bomb on an innocent victim, a detective clinging to the roof of speeding car--as well as a number of unique bits, like some creepy bobble-heads and a killer in a sports mascot costume doing a De Niro impression. (Be warned that the violence is sometimes extreme, though usually for comic effect, and there's a steady flow of strong language.) I--Bret Fetzer/I

1 out of 5 stars Mediocrity at its best   March 22, 2008

This is the most mediocre B Movie I have seen in a long while. Now I know why Canadian Productions can't have any commercial success. If this is the best we can come up with lets wrap it up. Its not worth the taxpayers money. br /I found the movie a typical Quebec propaganda, sexist where they present females as cheap trash and it is full of warped sense of humor of the Quebecers. Even the violence theyve thrown in is not believable and lacks finesse. The plotlines are flat, style and structure lacking with no fresh ideas. The concept would have been great if 15 minutes into the film the Ontario Cop, Colm Fiore character, did not revert to the French language and adapted to the French culture. From that point on the differences dissipated. This movie is not bilingual. It is in French, with English subtitles and occasionally some English sentences and swear words are thrown in. You could hear more English dialogue in Bollywood movies. If they really tapped into the differences of both cultures, the idiosyncrasies and obsessions, the wonderfully quirky and off-the wall character interactions, and I dont mean just throwing suspects in the trunk, it could have been a very interesting movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies from / about Canada and it's Culture   February 8, 2008

This movies is awesome, we recently moved to Canada and know exactly what this movies is about. The Pun, the language, the issues and of course the Hockey. There are times when things are predictible but overall it's an awesome good entertainment. One advantage about the DVD is that you can always rewind and playback which we did and laughed a lot more..... br /Highly recomended

5 out of 5 stars Canadian film at its best   November 6, 2007

Bon Cop, Bad Cop is absolutely brilliant - definitely one of my favorite Canadian films. It targets two important Canadian topics: the French-English relationship, and hockey. Even if you're not bilingual, you'll still be able to appreciate the script (and the jokes). Kudos should go out to the special effects team for doing such a great job. There should be more movies produced like this.

I loved this movie, its great to see something so Canadian out there and reflecting our billingualism. I'm not bilingual myself, but I watched it in English with English subtitles when the French converstation went on, it was just like being at the shopping mall with people speaking both languages. Thank you for making this great movie. I recommend it highly, especially to those trying to learn French or English as the subtitles really do help.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Canadian Action Comedy   December 29, 2006

The best mass-market Canadian film I have seen. You will need some acquaintance with Canadian culture to get much of the humour, and be at least a little bilingual to get all of it (though my unilingual English-speaking son also enjoyed it as much as I did), but this is an entertaining action movie in which an English Canadian cop and a Quebecois cop are forced to work together on a case, during which every stereotype of the contrasts between Ontarian and Quebecois culture is the subject of well-crafted good humour.
