"Some Issues But Great" August 30, 2007 Tommy.M (Canada,New Brunswick) INTRODUCTION:Season 2 DVD of the lengendary Dragon Ball Z series contains the interresting Namek and Captain Ginyu Sagas in 6 discs DVD set containing all 35 episodes of the second DBZ season. As popular and influential as this great anime can be,its DVD treatment so far left something to be desired,DVDs with only three episodes for over 20$ and others. Finally the show based on the manga gets a fair treatment as it is released in boxed sets containing full seasons(one is already ainvailable, and more will be). THE DVD SET ITSELF:With those DBZ sets they did good and bad things. The good things they did is that they released full seasons, updated the picture quality, its at a decent price and the booklet that gives a brief summary of each episodes and character information is a nice extra. All didn`t go right however, having it remastered is great but in widescreen?I personnally would have liked more full screen, like the show aired. There are also some issues with the languages and subtitles, the bonus features "extras" ,aren`t as good as they could have been. The packaging is bad, instead of putting six slim cases like most shows would have, this set has the overlapped cases and that`s annoying! If you can live with the bad things, you will enjoy this set a lot as the episodes are good, its intriguing and fun to watch. Also its affordable, more than being a few episodes on one DVD i guess. Here is what`s included in the season 2 set: Disc 1 -Held Captive -Friends or Foes? -The Search Continues -A Friendly Surprise -Brood of Evil -Frieza Strikes! Disc 2 -Defying Orders -Namek's Defense -The Hunted -The Prince Fights Back -Unexpected Problem -Begeta Has A Ball Disc 3 -The Past and Future -Zarbon's Surprise -Guru's Gift -Piccolo Vs. Everyone -Zarbon's Mission -Gohan, the Hunted Disc 4 -Unknown Enemies -Destination: Guru -Bulma's Big Day -Hidden Power -New Ally, New Problem -Guldo's Mind Binds Disc 5 -Recoome Unleashed -Let the Battle Begin -Goku's New Power -A Legend Revealed -Ginyu Assault -Incredible Force! Disc 6 -Frieza Approaches -Goku is Ginyu and Ginyu is Goku -Calling the Eternal Dragon -Gohan, Defeat Your Dad!! -Captain Ginyu...The Frog Extras: -Textless Songs -Opening Song -Closing Song -Trailers -AnimeOnline -Shin Budokai Another Road on PSP -Kiddy Grade -Yu Yu Hakusho -Case Closed -Z-Store The extras however are left to be desired,i would have liked better(a textless song?cmon!)extras and more them if possible as the japanese boxed set had way more things and better value. It ain`t the first DVD in the world that doesn`t have super extras,it happened before and it was to be expected here. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE:I would like to see more special features on the next sets like interviews and docummentary on the series as well as a better packaging with slim cases for the discs storage, and have the show back in full screen,if all that could be done it would be great! OVERRAL:there are a few issues with those DBZ sets but all in all,its worth the price, and we finally get full seasons not three episodes on a single DVD as it has already been seen,im gratefull that they released the seasons,it saves a lot of money and remains enjoyable.Recommended to DBZ and Anime fans.
Same as the last one June 26, 2007 G. Stuber (Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I didn't really complain about the last one, but this one, now I'm complaining. The video is good. It seems they worked harder in this set to correct the scratches in the video quality. What bugs me is the sound quality. The sound quality for the Japanese music and dub is mono. The lowest quality available on most dvds. Most of the people buying these boxsets will watch the Japanese dub. So it would make sense to have it at least in Stereo! Or Surround sound! Sheesh! The last boxsets' quality of the Japanese dub sounded like a bad fansub. Funimation needs to bring up the quality of the Japanese dub. Also, more extras would be nice! Textless songs no longer count as an extra! That's expected now! They should do what the Japanese boxset makers did: make a bigger deal of this stuff! They had interviews with the original animators and stuff, and it came with action figures and wicked stuff. This one just has textless songs. Ugh. Whatever.
A great release May 30, 2007 F. Ruhi 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great release. Funi kept up with the quality of the first set as well. It's a whole new experience watching it in 5.1 surround sound with the Japanese score and the english voices. Im glad also that they kept the original english music that the ginyu episodes aired with (as I loved that music, since that was what I first watched it with) Also with the video cropping issue that was with the last set, I guess it remains, but for me when I watch it doesnt seem like anything is missing, plus it fills up almost all of the space on my widescreen TV. Im already looking forwards to the next set, once again really happy that for the english score they kept the one it originally aired with, so when Im watching this again sometime later, I'll be able to switch to it and come back to a familiar score. For now, Im gonna go through the entire series with the japanese score. Thanks to this set I wont have to listen to the female voice for goku just to enjoy the japanese score. Anyways GREAT BUY! definitely recommended.
