--Marc Maesen
From Amazon.com William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas
Additional Features Skip all the numerous extras on this two-disc set and go right to Shrek's Re-Voice Studio on the DVD-ROM. Here fans can dub their voices to the character lines with magical precision. This first-of-its-kind feature is a dandy, easy to set up with clear instructions. It's also a kick in the pants. The ROM portion also contains the best of the many games. Other extras go from ho-hum (the DVD games) to standard (the 25-minute, behind-the-scenes featurette). Fake interviews with the cast are fun as is the karaoke party containing new animation, but contain only half the wit of the movie's shenanigans. It doesn't matter, though, since you're going to head back to the Re-Voice Studio again and again. --Doug Thomas

Really apart of what you've seen July 10, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a must-see. And it's not a easy way to define this film. This is for everyone, no matter of your sex, your age, your attitude to fairy tales, to cartoons or to music. "Shrek" has it to surprise and to enjoy each and everyone of your family or even none of your relatives. It is easy to see with every kind of company. It's sweet, it's bitter. It's plenty of laugh and plenty of love. Music is really a big part of the film and every tune is perfect. I don't know of anybody who dislike this film. Extremely enjoyable.
Watchable...but still July 1, 2004 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I must say that I had been looking forward to it. Now I liked the Shrek character and seeing all those from the fairy tales. But still, too crude and not very origanl. Eddie Murphy's voice was annoying most of the time (Like watching Buddy Love). Although it's not for young kids, it's watchable.
