Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
If you can stifle the urge to laugh at its pastel unisex costumes and futuristic shopping-mall decor, this extravagant science fiction film from 1976 is still visually fascinating and provocatively entertaining. Set in the year 2274, when ecological disaster has driven civilization to the protection of domed cities, the story revolves around a society that holds a ceremonial death ritual for all citizens who reach the age of 30. In a diseaseless city where free sex is encouraged and old age is virtually unknown, Logan (Michael York) is a "sandman," one who enforces this radical method of population control (but he's about to turn 30 and he doesn't want to die). Escaping from the domed city via a network of underground passages, Logan is joined by another "runner" named Jessica (Jenny Agutter), while his former sandman partner (Richard Jordan) is determined to terminate Logan's rebellion. Using a variety of splendid matte paintings and miniatures, ILogan's Run/I earned a special Oscar for visual effects (images of a long-abandoned Washington, D.C., are particularly impressive), and in addition to fine performances by Jordan and Peter Ustinov, the film features '70s poster babe Farrah Fawcett in a cheesy supporting role. Jerry Goldsmith's semi-electronic score is still one of the prolific composer's best, and ILogan's Run/I remains an interesting example of '70s sci-fi that preceded IStar Wars/I by less than a year. The widescreen DVD includes audio commentary by Michael York and director Michael Anderson, a behind-the-scenes promotional featurette, and the original theatrical trailer. i--Jeff Shannon/i

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Movie   December 24, 2007
Paul (Toronto)
This is an absolutly fantastic movie. Based on a novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, it was a spectacular screen adaption. This pre 1977 Sci-Fi film was unfortunatley forgotten by movie fans with the advent of Star Wars, it is never the less a absolutle master peice which I consider to be one of the top 5 Sci-Fi films of all time. Superb acting by Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Peter Ustinov combined with academy award winning special effects made this movie one of the most memorable I've ever seen. Some feel this film is dated, I've never really understood what that means, and I could disagree more. This is a perfect movie without faults. A Must See...

3 out of 5 stars slightly dated(yet relevant) futuristic tale of Utopia(or is it Dystopia?)   October 24, 2007
falcon (canada)
this is a hard movie to rate.It was made in 1976,so is dated in some br /ways by today's standards.the special effects, while innovative at the br /time,are almost laughable today.the story though is relevant in today's br /age,even more so than 1976.it brings up moral and ethical dilemmas as br /we may be closer to the events in the movie than ever, though br /admittedly,still a long way off.the basic premise is that everyone br /lives inside a walled city, free to do whatever they want, until, that is br /their 30th birthday.at this time, they must go through a process called br /"renewal",where they start over again. However, there are those, who wish br /to live beyond 30 and attempt to escape.these people are called br /"runners".an elite police force, known as the Sandmen, must find them and br /terminate them.this is the sole purpose of each Sandman. As i mentioned br /earlier,there are many moral and ethical dilemmas brought up by this br /movie,especially given Earth's History, its present, and most certainly br /its future.the movie is not heavy handed ,or preachy, however.you will br /have to watch the movie to find out more.If you are an action br /junkie,this movie may not be your cup of tea.while there is some br /action,it is not the bombastic, frenetic type of action found in many of br /today's movies.the movie is also more dialogue driven and is fairly br /slow at times.however,it does pick up and is worth watching, especially br /if you like movies which cause you to think. 3/5

5 out of 5 stars Humanity's Run   February 21, 2007
Greg (Canada)
This is one unique and very striking film. My only complaint is that it seems stretched out a bit later, before the explosive ending. But still, it is a visual marvel. Even the sound effects are highly appealing. It was a brilliant accomplishment for its time, and a title much adored by die hard cult fans. If you haven't seen "Logan's Run", don't call yourself one! For a time the film seems to be about violence and mayhem, but makes a surprising twist and becomes a morality tale about seeking the truth of the human soul. This film is really the artist's voice crying out, using a futuristic landscape to symbolize the condition of humanity in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars is like Plato's " Allegory of the Cave "   January 27, 2007
J. King (Nova Scotia, Canada)
* The film is FAR better than the book * br / This film meant a lot to me as a kid, and still does at the spiritual level. Perhaps it was it's parallel correspondence with Plato's famous essay, "Allegory of the Cave" ( in short, a piece that shows how we are conditioned by the society we grow up in but can break away from it's limitations and discover whole new dimensions for ourselves if we are brave enough to differentiate ourselves from the "herd" ). br / - The commentary section, and behind-the-scenes featurette, were VERY satisfying ... it would currently make a great film serial with today's CGI effects !

4 out of 5 stars Nice Movie   April 13, 2005
Glenn Laycock (Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada)
I kept thinking that this must have come our around the time of Planet of the Apes; very similiar type of movie.pIt starts of a bit slow as you don't care for the people much, but once Jenny Agutter comes into the movie, the chemistry between her and Michael York makes it an easy movie to watch.pIt was filmed in 1976 .. quite sometime ago and some of the effects show it. That said, some of the effects are quite good too.pIt surprised me a bit, but I was really glad to have gotten this DVD and watch it (a couple times now). It actually seems to have the effect -- on me at least -- to be a feel good movie. Likeable leads, good colour etc, and worth a viewing.
