iBatman Begins/i discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's iBatman Robin/i. As the title implies, iBatman Begins/i tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand? p Co-written by the team of David S. Goyer (a veteran comic book writer) and director Christopher Nolan (iMemento/i), iBatman Begins/i is a welcome return to the grim and gritty version of the Dark Knight, owing a great debt to the graphic novels that preceded it. It doesn't have the razzle dazzle, or the mass appeal, of iSpider-Man 2/i (though the Batmobile is cool), and retelling the origin means it starts slowly, like most "first" superhero movies. But it's certainly the best Bat-film since Burton's original, and one of the best superhero movies of its time. Bale cuts a good figure as Batman, intense and dangerous but with some of the lightheartedness Michael Keaton brought to the character. Michael Caine provides much of the film's humor as the family butler, Alfred, and as the love interest, Katie Holmes (iDawson's Creek/i) is surprisingly believable in her first adult role. Also featuring Gary Oldman as the young police officer Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as a Q-like gadgets expert, and Cillian Murphy as the vile Jonathan Crane. i--David Horiuchi/i p p span class="h1"strongiBatman/i at Amazon.ca/strong/span table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="4" cellpadding="4" tr align="center" valign="top" class="tiny" td width="33%" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00004XMS0.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg" border="0"br All iBatman/i DVDs/td td width="33%" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000B7QCHC.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg" border="0"br iBatman: The Animated Series/i, Vol. 4/td td width="33%" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0009A40ES.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg" border="0"br Where Have I Seen Christian Bale?/td /tr tr align="center" valign="top" class="tiny" td width="33%" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/1401206905.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg" border="0"br All iBatman/i Comics and Graphic Novels/td td width="33%" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/1932994181.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg" border="0"br iBatman Begins: /i The Official Movie Guide/td td width="33%" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0009IW88A.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg" border="0"br iBatman Begins/i Soundtrack/td /tr /table /p p span class="h1"strongStills from IBatman Begins/I (click for larger images)/strong/span table border="0" cellpadding="4" width="100%" cellspacing="4"p p tr align="center" valign="top" tdimg border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/video/stills/batman3-small.jpg"br /tdp p tdimg border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/video/stills/batman1-small.jpg"br /tdp tdimg border="0" src=" http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/video/stills/batman2-small.jpg"br /td /tr /table p

After all this time, I was clueless on how Batman is so powerful! We finally understand his past. This is great, you have to see this!

5 out of 5 stars The best Batman movie to date   February 7, 2008
J. Fernando (Toronto)
If you are a fan of the earlier movies then this one may not appeal to you as it is essentially a re-telling of the story. The pacing is also slower than previous entries which may alienate younger viewers. This is Batman for adults, dark imagery combined with a wonderful depth of story telling that was absent from the earlier movies. I'm really looking forward to the next installment. br /

5 out of 5 stars Re-Birth of Cool   October 9, 2007
Joseph Kayne (Victoria, B.C. Canada)
The movie itself is a triumph of storytelling. Christopher Nolan is spot on with his portrayal of the brooding caped avenger, and the dark world in which he lives. The rise of Gotham's Bruce Wayne to the legendary Dark Knight has never been handled so deftly. br / br /Christian Bale and the entire cast of this movie took their roles seriously, and gave realistic weight to every word, and every frame. For that reason alone this movie should be a must own. br / br /The quality of the transfer to HD DVD is beyond exceptional. The depth and realism is a boon to the comic movie genre, where suspension of disbelief is a must. The Dolby TrueHD audio is rich and expansive. Every nuance in the audio is felt, and truly serves to place you in an immersive experience. br / br /The extras are plentiful. everything that was included in the two disc special edition DVD of this title has been included here. Giving you an undisputed ultimate edition of the film. As an added bonus, the In-Movie Experience feature (picture-in-picture) adds insight to the film from Chris Nolan and the other film-makers that was sorely lacking from the other releases. br / br /Even if you are not a fan of comic-book movies, the performances, directing, as well as overall quality of this release, make it a title you shouldn't miss.
