Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
Steven Spielberg's 1982 hit about a stranded alien and his loving relationship with a fatherless boy (Henry Thomas) struck a chord with audiences everywhere, and it furthered Spielberg's reputation as a director of equally strong commercial sensibilities and classical leanings. Henry Thomas gives a strong, emotional performance as E.T.'s young friend, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore make a solid impression as his siblings, and Dee Wallace is lively as the kids' mother. The special effects almost look a bit quaint now with all the computer advancements that have occurred since, but they also have more heart behind them than a lot of what we see today. i--Tom Keogh/i

Additional Features
Universal pulled a fast one when they placed both the 1982 and 2002 versions of IE.T./I on this standard DVD release. The result is an excellent two-disc set that contains nearly all of the material on the higher-priced ultimate edition (minus the handsome packaging). On the disc one bonus menu, you must play through the two-minute introduction to see a short on the 2002 premiere of the film that was accompanied by John Williams conducting a live orchestra. There is an option to see the film with this unique soundtrack. The second disc contains a solid documentary on the making of the film and the reissue with plenty of interviews and cool tidbits. A slide show offers dozens of photographs and sketches, albeit with little descriptive text. Surprisingly, there are no original trailers. Since the movie was painstakingly restored and updated, the sound and picture quality are excellent. Now if we could just get Spielberg to do a commentary track. I--Doug Thomas/I

I--Marc Maesen/I

this movie has always been my favorite. I started watching this movie as a young kid. I now own the DVD and watch it non-stop. I am amazed by the special effects and how it was directed. I am a big fan of Steven Spielberg and I must say this is one of his best movies ever!

5 out of 5 stars Heartwrenching and touching..a real teary eyed experience!   August 2, 2006

I saw this movie in my school gymnasium when it was first released. All my teachers in the school knew that E.T. would be an especially good film that the entire school should watch. So everyone from Junior kindergarden to grade 8 was piled in to see this magical film. At the time i was in J.K. All i can remember from that day was crying uncontrollably. I knew i missed a lot of the film due to my frequent running to the bathroom for more kleenexes. Well, i just bought the collector series DVD recently thinking now i can finally watch the entire movie. Did you know i still ran frequently to the bathroom for more kleenexes? br / br /This movie is a masterpiece. It tugs at your heartstrings and makes you examine your feelings on a visceral level. For me, E.T. was my first experience with the prospect of dying. Because he was so kind and lovable to see him lying in a ravine near death was hard to watch. I think this is a great first movie for kids to be introduced to difficult topics like death and rebirth. Even as an adult it made me examine my relationships and how i relate to the people in my life. It's a movie about self discovery and acceptance of things that may not be in your realm of understanding but deserve the same amount of compassion as anyone else. br / br /E.T. is a wonderful alien that shows human children the meaning of love and acceptance despite outward appearances. That is a lesson worth remembering for young and old alike. br / br /I would shout out to the mountains, down to the valleys, and into outerspace if i could. But please take a look at this movie once and you'll love it forever. A definite keeper and its not dated in the 1980s. You can watch this movie and feel as if it was just recently released. The digital remastering is superb and the acting is tremendously good. Watch it you won't regret it! A definite add on to your movie library.

5 out of 5 stars E.T. The Cult Classic 20 yrs later   July 7, 2004

It took 3 models of E.T. and whole number of great special effects and money to make this film but what it really took was the human element to make this one of the most memorable films in the last 20 years of film-making. Nothing or no one can capture the magic of this film.pReleased in 1982 under a great deal of hype and marketing power, E.T. became one of the highest grossing films of all time, giving Steven Spielberg the award of being one of the greatest directors not only in the American cinema but in the whole world, even probably to where E.T. came from.pThe movie is similar to other sci-fi alien flicks like THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL,but E.T. has more heart , humor and magic that any other previous sci-fi film.pThis movie was shown on TNT this Saturday and probably will show again during the holidays, so you can catch E.T. if you want to relive the magic of being a kid and see this great film.pI had the pleasure of seeing E.T. when it came out (I was about 6 or 8 years old)and watching it again , it still has that same magic it had 18 or 20 years ago.pThe movie starts off with the E.T. spaceship landing on a remote forest for some much needed repairs, then suddenly a couple of greedy government agents notice something moving in the forest (E.T.) and go after it.pE.T.'s friends seeing the threat coming, leave behind E.T.,pand so E.T. is entirely helpless and very afraid until he meets a young boy,Elliot (Henry Thomas) who cares for E.T. until his friends come back for him.pThis movie resembles the story of a boy and a dog, they share alot of things together and when one hurts , the other one hurts as well.pSo while E.T. is secretly hidden in Elliot's room alot of weird things start happening to Elliot he becomes sick and doesn't know.pThe reason Elliot is sick is because E.T. is sick as well and they share a bond between each other thats make them feel the same thing.pElliot's mother , Mary (Dee Wallace Stone who appeared in the cult classics the Howling, and the Stepford Wives) finds out what is going on ,but by the time she figures that out, the government agents come in and steal E.T. along with Elliot.pIn what is the most saddest moment in the movie, we assume E.T. has died and I bet everyone in the movie theater was crying too,but E.T. comes back to life with his universal saying E.T. phone home?. :-)pIn the end, E.T. does phone home and tells Elliot that he will be with him Ill be right here as he points to his heart.pThat is classic movie making folks.pSee this movie to relive the magic and if you can get it on DVD with extra footage and behind the scenes specials, get it!! By all means but if you cant , get the VHS version.!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Steven Spieldberg's Masterpiece   May 3, 2004
Ryne Williams (Cleveland, TN USA)
E.T. is one of the greatest films of all time. It takes you by surprise. You feel everything E.T. is feeling. After the movie, it shocks you that you found heart and compassion from something that looks like a mud sculpture. E.T. also has some of the greatest performances from child actors than in any other movie. In this film, we see little Drew Barrymore making a stellar breakout performance as the little sister of Elliot in the film. The new 20th Anniversary of E.T. special edition definately is better than the original cut. The effects sparkle like never before. The DVD is a wonderful thing to add to anyone's DVD collection.

I'm so glad this movie is fimally on DVD. I loved it when I first saw it as a child. I hadn't seen it in several years and loved watching it again when I bought the DVD. I'm glad I now have a copy to share with my children.
