| Editorial Reviews:
From Amazon.com Based on a retro-styled comic book hit of the '80s, this Disney film was meant to launch a whole line of Rocketeer films--but the series began and ended with this one. That's too bad, because this underrated Joe Johnston film has a certain loopy charm. The story centers on a pre-World War II stunt pilot (Bill Campbell) who accidentally comes into possession of a rocket-propelled backpack much coveted by the Nazis. With the aid of his mechanic pal (Alan Arkin), he gets it up and running, then uses it to foil a plot by a gang of vicious Nazi spies (is there any other kind?) led by Timothy Dalton. Jennifer Connelly is on hand as the love interest, but the real fun here is when the Rocketeer takes off. There's also a nifty battle atop an airborne blimp. --Marshall Fine

should be rated at least PG-13 February 22, 2008 this movie is not as good as i had expected or hoped.for one thing,i found it too insubstantial, with a pretty weak story.the potential was there, but it just wasn't realized.there also existed the possibility of some humour in the movie, but that doesn't really develop either.it's also slow, with only intermittent scenes of action.there's almost no character development.as a matter of a fact, there were a few characters that had almost nothing to do.this movie runs about 104 minutes without end credits, but i had to stop it,to break up the monotony.the American and Canadian rating on this movie is PG,but i think it should be at least PG-13.i think it's a bit too intense for any under 13,but that's just me.nevertheless, parents should use their discretion.my vote for The Rocketeer is a 2/5
Beem's Gum and Jennifer Connelly too July 16, 2006 Bill Campbell well known for his portrayal as Delbert Mosley in the HBO alien adventure "Out There" (1995) plays the witless hero, based on the comic book by Dave Stevens, in this flight of fancy accompanies by a well seasoned and recognizable entourage.
It is the 1930's. Pilot Cliff Secord (Bill Campbell) and his mechanic partner Peevy (Alan Arkin) want to fly in the nationals. Little did they know that they would cross paths with the number three box office star Neville Sinclair (Timothy Dalton) whom for some nefarious reason wants to pilfer a (back-pack) rocket designed by Howard Hughes (Terry O'Quinn).
Well it seems that Cliff got his hands on the rocket, but Neville knowing the Cliff has it, has got his hands on Cliff's girl Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly). So will they make a trade or is there something greater at stake?
Top Notch Movie... So-So DVD July 13, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered "The Rocketeer" over a year ago and finally had chance to watch it this past weekend. I haven't seen it in several years, and I must say, it's even better than I remembered it! Billy Campbell is terrific and Jennifer Connely glows. Alan Arkin is a reliable sidekick... and Timothy Dalton positively shines as the villain of the piece! The movie has a Saturday matinee feel to it, but with top-notch production values. It also has a great sense of humor. It's one of the best movies that no one saw. Too bad. I was disappointed with the picture quality of my dvd. Is this common for this particular release, or did I get a lemon? Also would have like to have seen some additional extra features. I know I saw a featurette on creating the rocket-pack scenes somewhere many years ago. Regardless... This is one movie I'm really glad to have. I'll be watching and re-watching it for years to come.
An AWESOME MOVIE! July 2, 2004 This is one of the most coolest, fun filled movies I have ever seen because of everything that it has to make it a great movie. Simply GREAT!!!!!!
Nice! July 2, 2004 THIS MOVIE IS SO COOL AND IS A MUST SEE FOR ALL COMIC BOOK FANS! TRULY TRULY GREAT!
