Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
A big, bruising epic of the Korean War, ITae Guk Gi/I smashed box-office records when it played in South Korea in 2004, almost as though the country needed to re-live the trauma at a 50-year distance. For the rest of the world, this movie looks like a ground-level reckoning in a melodramatic key, with an authentic feel for battle lines as well as home front. ITae Guk Gi/I follows two brothers--one uneducated and forceful, the other intellectual and reserved--as they are united and then divided by the conflict. The broadly emotional story has some of the power of tales of the American Civil War, when family members found themselves on opposite sides of a battle. Director Kang Je-gyu , who made the lively female-assassin hit IShiri/I, takes a blunt approach to the material (including a ISaving Private Ryan/I-style framing device). And at 150 minutes, he has plenty of time for head-splitting, blood-spraying combat. This movie is meant as a punch in the stomach, and it connects. I--Robert Horton/I

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Film   March 31, 2007
B. Bakker (Canada)
What makes a great war movie? Involvement with the characters, realism of the battle sequences, and amazing cinematography all contribute - and this movie has it all. So why only 4 stars and not 5? Well, it suffers from melodrama - it nears, and goes over the top emotionally. Also, use the subtitles, and not the English dubbing. The English voice-overs sound hokey and laughable. Do yourself a favour - just pretend it was never dubbed.

5 out of 5 stars Korean War - 2 brothers   February 24, 2005

I have viewed many USA point-of-views re the Korean War but never from the South Korean's perspective. This is war in all its gruesome realities with an added human element of two brothers struggling to save each other.pThe Korean is dubbed over in English which I became used to quickly. Shot in Korea, you have the privilege of being introduced to the Korean cultural aspect also.pThe photography is excellent. It reminds me a bit of Saving Private Ryan during the battle scenes. The cast is huge and the action tremendously convincing.pI am elated this wasn't just all battles. The love of family and love between the 2 brothers is what motivates this story. Although horrible in one aspect, the supreme love dominates all their actions. I can't say more without revealing what occurs. Suffice it to say, this movies is the best asian film I have ever seen and surprisingly, contains a great deal of warmth, sentiment and morals.
