Amazon.ca Comprised of former members of Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell grew out of a 2006 reunion of post-Ozzy frontman Ronnie James Dio, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Vinny Appice for the purpose of recording new tracks for a Sabbath compilation called The Dio Years. Heaven & Hell then toured, drawing deep from the Dio-era Sabbath catalogue. The masterful Heaven & Hell: Live from Radio City Music Hall is one result of that rekindled partnership, a two-hour, Gothic metal marathon filmed in 2007 before a thrilled New York City audience. Largely comprised of classic Sabbath material, the show unfolds with a deceptive ease. The seasoned bandmates play with graceful concentration even as they plunge into the maw of doomstruck power chords and grinding riffs, the wiry Dio stalking Heaven & Hell's swampy sound like some fusion of a crow and benevolent overlord. At times, it's impossible not to contradict oneself while trying to describe the group's intricate, paradoxical sound: "Children of the Sea," for instance, is somehow both a snaking and watery mystery. "E5150/After All (The Dead)" is equally epic and nonchalant. "I" is a show-stopping, nightmarish blues that leans toward the anthemic, while "Falling Off the Edge" is highlighted by a molten rhythm and Dio's taut vocal. This is a fine outing from a historic ensemble. --Tom Keogh

A Great Metal Classic January 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wow!!! I was lucky enough to see Black Sabbath on the Mob Rules tour back in 1982. The band was not near as great then as they are now in this outing. "Lady Evil" shines with more conviction than the version on the Heaven and Hell album from 1980. "I" sounds like "Into The Void" on steroids. The riff sounds very similar to that one but the band is so much tighter musically together live. Everyone sounds like they have got better over time. Led Zeppelin were heavy in their day but if one wants to find out the true origins of metal Black Sabbath has to be the group who started it all. This is a classic metal concert from Black Sabbath's 2nd phase of their career. Highly recommended.
A lesson in Heavy Metal January 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I bought this DVD my expectations were that it may be an ok watch but that most likely I was going to see 4 has-beens trying to rekindle some old magic and falling short. I could NOT have been further from the truth. I was amazed at the lesson these guys taught me. I own a lot of concert DVD's and seldom have heard songs actually sound better live than on the studio release. The stage looks amazing and the band offers a masterful performance with high quality sound in the beautiful Radio City Music Hall. As an experienced lead guitarist myself I have never gave Tony Iommi the credit he deserved until seeing this DVD. His guitar performance and sound were both world class. I was equally blown away with the other three Metal icons. Six star rating.

Dio at his best. Great sound and video quality. If you're a fan of hard rock/metal, you must get this DVD!
Heavier Than Hell! September 18, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Dio is better on this DVD than on his Holy Diver Live DVD. You can tell he's right in his element. Vinny Appice is excellent on the drums. The Dio Years were indeed Sabbath's definite best years and this DVD is the living proof. When they dive into the son "I" you know this is the real deal. The production, editing and sound quality is excellent. Worth every penny! Sabbath Rocks!!!
Best Black Sabbath DVD! Musical masterpiece! September 15, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Black Sabbath with Dio are no less Black Sabbath than the one with Ozzy. The sound is there, the mood as well, the vocals are even better. It's a treat for the fans no matter how they are calling themselves. The three albums with Dio are one of the Best Black Sabbath have ever recorded. Heaven And Hell alone is among the top 100 best rock albums ever together with two other albums sung by Dio- the Rainbow album "Rising" and Dio's"Holy Diver". All songs on this DVD (including the new ones) are great. The quality of sound and music is an example for the new bands-it's perfect. And who would think that Dio turned sixty-five last July- he sings as powerful as when he was 30. A lifetime experience! Considering the annoying interview breaks on "The Last Supper" this is the best Black Sabbath DVD to date!
