Amazon.com Essential Video When this popular prison drama was released in 1994, some critics complained that the movie was too long (142 minutes) to sustain its story. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice, and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully understand why writer-director Frank Darabont (adapting a novella by Stephen King) allows the story to unfold at its necessary pace, and the effect is dramatically rewarding. Tim Robbins plays a banker named Andy who's sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge, but as he gets to know a life-term prisoner named Red (Morgan Freeman), we realize there's reason to believe the banker's crime was justifiable. We also realize that Andy's calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that IThe Shawshank Redemption/I builds considerable impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith, friendship, and survival. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor, and Screenplay, it's a remarkable film that signaled the arrival of a promising new filmmaker--a film that many movie lovers count among their all-time favorites. I--Jeff Shannon/I

This is still one of my favorites March 8, 2008 Tarita Walton I cannot count how many times I have watched this movie. And I will probably watch it again and again. It still remains one of my favorites after seeing it many times. It is one of those rare stories that really touches people. If you are looking for a good movie that you can enjoy more than once then Shawshank Redemption is your movie.
Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free. December 16, 2007 DVDAHOLIC (Toronto, Canada) How many ways can I list why this is best movie of all time? br / br /1. The most perfect ending of any movie I've ever seen. 2. Best story - Steven King (not even a fan of his) 3. Best acting performance: Morgan Freeman, absolutely br / br /amazing, best ever (Tim Robbins is brilliant also) 4. Best narration - Morgan Freeman's character 5. Most uplifting, touching, moving story ever told. 6. Outstanding soundtrack 7. Beautiful cinematography. 8. Most evil antagonist - The warden 9. Best dialogue - so many memorable phrases and quotes! br / br /I could keep going. I've never encountered a movie that has touched so many people. br / br / br /The Shawshank Redemption is a story of life itself. It is not about a person in prison, it is about the soul and the battle it accepts and carries on to deserve the life it has been given by God. I watched the movie for the first time some months ago. That evening I was about to go out with some friends but out meeting was canceled and I had to stay home. Being unhappy about that, I started watching the movie on the TV just by chance, not knowing about its existence before that at all. At first I was skeptic, I admit that. But oh God, at the end of it I was screaming and jumping in my room at 1 AM! It gave me so much emotions and so much hope, I had never felt before that. I could hardly believe that a movie could make me feel that way - so excited, so happy about my life, leaving me believing so much in my own self. It is a great story of what the strength of your thoughts can make you do. In The Shawshank Redemption desire does not make you weak, just the opposite - gives you wings to fly away from fear, fly closer and closer to freedom. Morgan Freeman's voice is just another advantage that makes the movie even more impressive. Tim Robbins' act is just beyond perfection! I bought the DVD this summer and every time I feel weak or just bad about something, I watch the movie. It has become my personal shrink, making me feel strong enough anytime I watch it. Can never imagine a better movie made anywhere in the world even after 1000 years!
moving and emotionally impactful(if you liked "The Green Mile" you will like this movie) August 20, 2007 falcon (canada) like "The Shawshank Redemption,"The Green Mile" is another case of a br /Stephen King story which translates well from the page to the screen.as br /in "Mile",this movie is also directed by Frank Darabont, who also wrote br /the screenplay.another similarity is the prison setting and the fact br /that the movie is seen and told through the eyes of one man (Morgan br /Freeman)who just happens to be a prison lifer and the things he sees as br /the years go by.he tells the story of one man who becomes a br /prisoner(Tim Robbins) and who he becomes friends with.the movie then br /chronicles their friendship and struggles in the prison system.unlike br /"The Green Mile",there is no mystical or supernatural element to this br /film.however,this film is of the same calibre of "Mile",owing to its br /solid writing, acting, and direction."Shawshank" is very dramatic, yet br /very compelling.it's also a very moving tale.it will likely impact you br /emotionally and intellectually. and before i forget,i must also mention br /the ending, which i thought was very strong.for me,"The Shawshank br /Redemption" is a strong 5/5

A lot of fancy words have been used in some reviews of this film. If you want my advice, this is simply the best film you will probably see.pSpend part of a Sunday afternoon in front of your tv and turn it up! :-)

Whoever wrote the following review, I've got to hand it to you for almost pulling my leg. This is funny stuff, I actually thought you were serious at first. I'm sure they're many ninnies who will put their DVD copy in now and think there's something wrong. Keep it up.pAnyhoo, The Shawshank Redemption is a great piece of work. Better on DVD than in the theaters (unless you get to take that special someone to the last row wink wink. Buy it if your internet connection just happens to be down. Of course that last statement was a joke.p---brMy third submission on this, if you are doubtful, check for yourself. I own the VHS of Shawshank. I recently purchased a DVD player and Shawshank was one of my first disks. I set both the disk and the tape up to play simultaneously, and flipped back and forth to compare the superb quality improvement of DVD. I was in for a surprise. The picture DOES NOT get wider-AS IT SHOULD-and the top and bottom of the picture of the DVD version are ERASED and replaced by the black bars. The other movie I found with this flaw is Jackie Brown. Check out the point where Bridget Fonda services Robert DeNiro. On the VHS widescreen version , her buns disappear. They are fully visable on the fullscreen version! The top and bottom have been erased on the widescreen version and the picture does not get any wider. I suspect more movies have this flaw. Now that we know what to look for, let's look!br---
