Before Holmes and Watson, there was Doyle and Bell. June 19, 2007 Alex Boyd (Toronto, Ontario Canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Before writing the Sherlock Holmes stories, Arthur Conan Doyle served as a clerk to the brilliant, eccentric professor at the University of Edinburgh, Dr Joseph Bell, known for his keen observational powers, and widely believed to be the inspiration for the famous detective. br / br /Murder Rooms is a brief TV series (four feature-length stories) that imagines Doyle working with Bell and solving crimes together. In short, this collection has four excellent stories, all with good acting, writing and production values. And just a friendly warning this is fairly dark stuff, though the mood is somewhat relieved by one ray of light: the bond between these two gentlemen as they pursue the truth. Ian Richardson is excellent as Bell (he actually played Holmes a few times too) and it hardly matters that he barely attempts a Scottish accent, his presence and excellent acting skills are more than enough. br / br /The original pilot for the series (with the two of them meeting) was called Dr Bell and Mr Doyle, and is not included here, though it is available. It isn't exactly required viewing for the rest of the series as the stories all stand on their own, but will certainly add to your understanding of the characters.
