Plot is a meaningless term when trying to describe Lost Highway. Here, more or less, is what happens: A noise-jazz saxophonist (Bill Pullman) suspects his wife (Patricia Arquette) of infidelity. Meanwhile, someone is breaking into their house and videotaping them while they sleep. The wife is murdered and Pullman is convicted of the crime. Then, in prison, he transmogrifies into a young mechanic (Balthazar Getty) who is subsequently released, since, after all, he's not the guy they convicted. Getty goes back to his life and meets a local gangster's moll, who happens to be played by Patricia Arquette... but none of this has much to do with what the movie is really about. Dreams are what intrigues director David Lynch. Not friendly, happy dreams; his dreams whisper that what we think is real is just something we made up, something to keep ourselves from falling into chaos. Characters are fragments. Events happen not because they make sense, but because deep down we want these things to happen. Of course, in Lynch's dreams, as in our waking lives, getting what we want is not always pleasant. In the movie's best moments, you really have no idea what you're seeing. The screen is a big rectangle of color and shadow, but what it represents, well, it could be anything. And yet, in those moments, you've been given just enough hints of place, character, and story that these elusive images elicit a genuine dread, a sense that you might not want to see this, yet you can't look away; a sense that we are living on borrowed time, that something is fiercely askew in our psyches. As a whole, Lost Highway is a failure: much of it is padded, gratuitous, and indulgent and pointless cameos bog down an already sluggish narrative. Yet within that failure are moments worth more than the entirety of most successful movies. --Bret Fetzer

Long have fans of Lynch waited for a proper release of Lost Highway, and finally here's a good one. I won't go into what it's about or discuss why I think it's good. It's a Lynch movie so you'll either love it or you won't. This review is for those who're wondering whether or not to get this version. This version is far superior to its notoriously awful predecessor. The image quality on the original was so bad, it was barely watchable. The new release boasts a gorgeous print and it's finally in widescreen. There's no bonus material on the DVD, but who cares really if it looks this good now? Bottom line, if you don't own it, get this release. If you own the original, throw it out! Get this one.
I almost never write reviews, just thought people should know the deal with this DVD seeing as how it hasn't really been reviewed anywhere.

This is the 5.1/widescreen version...finally! Yes, i also made the mistake of buying the old pan & scan version a few years back, which I immediately returned. Hopefully this new version is up to par and snazzy!
Why is the new version not available on Amazon.ca January 22, 2008
I fully expect to order the new widescreen re-done version of this title, but amazon is forcing me to by it from amazon.com, instead of amazon.ca. It is available for pre-order on Amazon.com but not at all on amazon.ca.

loved the film,hated the format.i will never buy a pan and scan version of anything. i cannot imagine chopping lynch's work and serving it up on dvd.i consider it an insult to a great director

As for the movie I think there has been enough said on it. As for the dvd quality it's another thing ... maybe some people might be interested by the low price ... even though it'S not always the case but in the case it is ... low price means low quality ... i see people seems to be talking about the sound but man the image is really bad ... ok not bad as you cannot see any detail or it's too dark or something ... no no on that side it's perfect. The only really negative point is that the image is sooooo pixelized ... probably due to it's fullscreen format. As you all know I presume fullscreen is actually a stetch out version of widescreen in order to delete the infamous black bars ... In that case I think they stretch the image without adjusting it afterward ... when you stretch an image imperfections tend to get worst and a readjustement of the color level is require ... too bad they didn't work on that ...
