From Amazon.com Comprehensive but user-friendly, reasonably challenging but accessible to a variety of levels, Yoga Shakti is inarguably one of the best yoga products on the market--no small achievement when one considers just how many of them there are. Instructor-creator Shiva Rea, a California-based yogi of considerable international renown, specializes in vinyasa yoga (a vinyasa is essentially a series of flowing, connected poses, incorporating breath and movement and cultivating heat, strength, flexibility, and balance). Four complete practices are presented, ranging in length from 42 to 85 minutes and including Basic Flow (for beginners), two more vigorous Solar Flow sequences, and a Lunar Flow sequence falling somewhere in the middle in terms of degree of difficulty; familiar poses like sun salutations, forward bends, lunges, twists, and inversions are featured, although Rea adds many of her own touches (such as the four "dancing warrior" sections, sun salutation variations designed for intermediate users and focusing on hips, backbends, and so on), and there are also sections devoted to pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. It's all good, but the principal innovation of Yoga Shakti is the "yoga matrix," which allows users to customize and program their own workouts, drawing on portions of any or all of the four sequences to create series of various lengths and levels of intricacy (some guidelines are suggested for the less experienced) and thus keep their practices fresh and evolving. One can also do the various workouts with or without the instruction audio track on (the Indian-New Age-flavored music is quite good, and usually unobtrusive), and there's even an entire second disc, containing interviews, additional instruction, travel footage (filming took place primarily in India and the Maldive Islands), and more. All in all, Yoga Shakti is most impressive. --Sam Graham

Truly Inspirational September 25, 2008 Amy VG (Southern Ontario) Shiva Rea is perhaps the most inspiring yoga instructor out there (that's available on DVDs, as I'm sure there are many amazing yoga instructors teaching in local yoga studios). I have been practicing the Yoga Shakti DVD for a couple of months now. It is so wonderful. Using her unique matrix system, you can "create" an abundant different sequences, mainly traditional sun and moon salutations (with Rea's own unique take on them). Shiva Rea's form is just perfect, every move and pose is flawlessly executed. This practice is not for the absolute beginner. I pop in this DVD when I'm feeling energetic and ready to take on a challenge. I'm always glad I did, as I usually feel so amazing afterwards. It reminds me of when I use to walk home after a taking a class at an amazing yoga studio in Toronto, and I felt like I was walking on a cloud, as every muscle tingled with energy. That's how I feel after a Yoga Shakti "class". That's never happened with any other home practice DVD. I have been practicing yoga for 14 years now, and taught "power yoga" at the last gym I worked at before kids. For the past 7 years though, I've been mainly practicing yoga at home, and so I have collected a huge array of yoga DVDs. Many are boring and mechanical, except for the Namaste series, and now the Shiva Rea DVDs. So if you've been practicing yoga for several years and are bored of your routine, then I highly recommend trying one of Shiva Rea's inspiring DVDs. She'll take you to another - spiritually moving - level, and perhaps rekindle your love of yoga.
Beautiful but impractical September 25, 2008 Joanna (Toronto, ON) The settings and the cinematography really are gorgeous in this DVD. Shiva Rea's voice is all you'd want your yoga teacher's voice to be. It really is a work of art. What I found impractical about it however is the fact that the shorter the workout, the more basic the poses. I would have liked to have some more advanced routines for the time-pressed. As it is, I pick the longer routines, and do them with a remote control by the side... don't know too many people who can devote 1.5 hrs to yoga with any regularity. Also, I prefer more guidance in my relaxation and breathing routines... as it is, you're read poems about the stars bestowing their energy on you, etc, and then you're just expected to lie there relaxing... some progressive relaxation would've been really nice there... The second DVD takes you behind the scenes on the making of the first DVD, and then has a bunch of people (famous yogis??) talk about what yoga means to them.
Wow! August 8, 2008 Samantha Peterson (Ottawa (Kanata), Ontario Canada) I had gotten a beginners yoga dvd a few years ago and from that dvd (that you had to use blocks etc), I was completely turned off yoga thinking it wasnt for me and decided to switch to Tai Chi. Looking for a more advanced tai chi dvd, I saw this dvd and something about the cover and reviews made me want to try it again. And now I LOVE yoga! I like how she makes it like aerobics/dancing and I dont need blocks or even a mat (I just do it on my hardwood floor). The scenery is beautiful with the sea and there are so many exercises, hours and hours of stuff on this dvd and not just a couple routines like my first yoga dvd and even the tai chi one. I highly recommend it!
Surprisingly Very Satisfactory! February 23, 2008 River Corazon (Toronto, Canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was in the market for some at-home yoga DVDs. I've tried other DVDs, they were also effective but Shiva Rea's... Amazing! If you really want to get a closely authentic yoga work-out, this DVD is the one to buy! I've taken classes before, both meditative and relaxing, as well as hot yoga (Bikhram, Moksha, and a type of Vinyasa flow). As a beginner trying to learn how to align my body correctly, the instruction Shiva Rea gives really helps! She also gives you options for modification if you're just starting off and you can't even touch your knees! I'm not trying to sell this DVD, but if you really want a thigh-to-shoulder-burn/hip-opening-spine-lengthening work-out, this video will do it! You also have the option to make it as difficult as you want! So, when you finally learn the "easy" asanas, and the work-out doesn't provide you with a warm fresh-from-yoga-class glow, you can add another on top of another "dancing warrior" series. The only limitation with this video is that it mainly focuses on sun salutations, and warrior poses. Shiva Rea also does back-bends, shoulder/hand stands, forward bends and twists as well as other yoga practises (meditation, breathing, etc). Shiva Rea is phenomenal!
Absolutely wonderful!!! December 3, 2007 Jackie P (Montreal, Qc) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the first yoga dvd I have purchased (and actually, the first exercise video I ever bought). I was a little skeptical at first, as I am accustomed to doing courses at the gym. However, as life gets busier and time constraints don't really allow for this, I realized that it was time to get into exercising at home. I am pleased to say that Yoga Shakti has now become a huge part of my life! Shiva Rea's voice is comforting & soothing, the background brings peace, and the various routines included in this DVD are great!! They are challenging and definitely give you room for improvement. I highly recommend that anyone who loves yoga start off with this tape (as long as they're up for the challenge, a little more "upbeat" than most yoga courses I have taken). This dvd could receive nothing less than 5 stars!!!
