Guns, guns, guns! And a few explosions as bodies fly through the air and crash into tables and fruit stands. Once Upon a Time in Mexico, like all Robert Rodriguez movies, is all about the kinetic kick of high-velocity action. Johnny Depp, blase and whimsical, plays a CIA agent who's drawn guitar-playing gun-slinger Antonio Banderas (long black hair flopping over his face like the ears of a Labrador puppy) into a ridiculously convoluted plot to overthrow the Mexican government. Along for the ride are a craggy-faced rogue's gallery including Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, Ruben Blades, and (to balance things out) the smooth, tantalizing complexions of Eva Mendes and Salma Hayek. For sheer trashy fun, Once Upon a Time in Mexico is a step down from its predecessor, Desperado--but Desperado set the bar pretty high. For coherent storytelling, look elsewhere, but for action razzle-dazzle, this is your movie. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars shot,chopped and scored...   November 11, 2004

WOW! I have just watched Once upon a time in Mexico for the second time in a row today!I rented it mainly because any movie with johnny depp in it intrests me as he is my fave actor. Boy was I not disappointed! Johnny was fantastic! Funny, sexy, scary, intresting....is there nothing he cnt do! Not only was Johnny Depp amazing but I found myself enthralled by the story and the whole legacy of El Mariachi. How cool is this film? I think cool is the word to describe this film as it doesn't take itself too seriously but still manages to be taken seriously. It's basically just fun all the way with intersting characters, fantastic shootouts and the coolest accessory eva. Who would have thought a guitar case could be so effective? I loved the music and how Banderas plays even in the middle of a shootout. Intersting fact did u know that Johnny Depp scored his own theme for Agent Sands called Sands theme? He plays the guitar himself.
For anyone in need of a thouraghly entertaining film watch this movie. It will get u talking about it for ages just like me.. I'm off to watch El Mariachi and Desperado now......

The director did a great job on this film and I loved the way it was layed out, great gunfights and I like how the director made it his own, these movies are no copies of john woo, no disrespect to him of cource but it wasnt.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny Johnny Depp Depp Depp   July 25, 2004
Has Johnny Depp ever given a bad performance? Even if this movie doesn't happen to be your favorite, and yes, you have to pay atttention to get the plot details, it really has some interesting personalities and performances. The title really tells it all, Once upon a time in Mexico. It is a tall tale, fokelore if you will. A story with Really Bad guys and bad good guys too. Clever with rather warped humour. All in all, a really orginal kind of film.

This movie was such a waste of time. It gets a half star for having semi-decent shootouts and another for a great perfomance by Johnny Depp. Personally though, if you want gunfights you'd do better by renting a John Woo film. By the way whose idea was it to give Enrique a gun. With that said rent at your own risk.

2 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE!!!!   July 13, 2004

The only reason I gave this movie 2 stars is because of Johnny Depp. As always he overshadows everyone else in the movie with his dark humor and personality, despite the All Star Cast (Banderas, Hayek, Ruben Blades,Enrique Iglesias,etc.).But this movie turned out to be just a confusing and senseless bloodbath.

Buy it only if you are a J.Depp fan. If you are looking for a fast paced fun action movie get Kill Bill Vol.1 or check out 2004's remake of "Dawn of the Dead", both are much better.
