 First rate Western February 20, 2008
This is a terrific film! There is plenty of action, great locations with gritty and realistic sets and costumes. But what stands out are the performances by Russell Crowe as Ben Wade and Christian Bale as Dan Evans. Each tortured in their own way, Crowe and Bale give these characters real flesh and bones with their own complex emotional life. They are supported by an excellent cast of characters. As for the film score, Marco Beltrami has penned a score that beautifully reflects all the emotional and physical aspects of this film. His homage to the maestro Ennio Morricone is apparent but Beltrami has put his own stamp on the soundscape he has created. Director James Mangold("Walk The Line") has given us a stellar addition to the Western genre.

3:10 to Yuma is a remake of a 1950's western about a farmer (Christian Bale) ravished by poverty, drought and humiliation who one day accepts a $200 pay day to transport a dangerous prisoner (Russel Crowe) to the train station that leads to Yuma. Exciting and suspenseful throughout, this is easliy one of the best westerns done in the past 20 years, probably the best one since Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. The acting by the two leads is sublime and the action non-stop. Recommended for anybody, even non-western fans!
 An interesting change January 30, 2008
Great character development that goes off in directions unexpected for the genre. You start not knowing who to cheer for, and by the end you realize you need to be rooting for both despite the main characters' conflicting interests.
Surprisingly good... almost great...! January 23, 2008
First of all, I'm not a western movie fan AT ALL... but... this one is actually very good most probably due to the great performances of Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. The flow of the script is shady at times, but the final product is brilliant. Even though I insisted that I hate western movies, it was highly recommended to me and I am glad it was. You don't really need to be a western lover to enjoy this movie (it might help a little, but not a great deal). It's very entertaining and the cast is outstanding, a good recipe for a good movie!

Russel Crowe has somewhat of a bad reputation. In this movie he is displays this with a great deal of expertise. Crowe was excellent portraying the role of Ben Wade, a very mean outlaw who has little or no feelings for the well being of others. Sounds like a typical outlaw but he is not. Christian Bale plays a dirt poor farmer with part of a leg missing and about to lose his farm. In desperate need of money He agrees to get Crowe on a train headed to Uma, so Wade can be tryed and then hanged. Bale plays his part almost as well as Crowe. It is the best western to come to the big screen in a long time. This movie is an award winner.
