Catherine or Danielle? November 18, 2002 Daniel (San Jose, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Beautiful film. But for the folks who thought Catherine Deneuve sang in the film: it was the heavenly voice of Danielle Licari, the popular French singer of the time. It's hard to find any recording by Danielle for sale now.
Get the two-cd complete plus extra material July 23, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a must-have soundtrack, absolutely great, but there is a double cd of the entire film score, at the end of which is great extra material, including Tony Bennett singing the "Watch What Happens" song and LeGrand playing jazzy renderings of some of the music with unbelievable creativity and virtuosity. Well worth the extra money, and there's not a bad track.
Superb! October 26, 2000 Music Lover (United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Incredible example of one of France's most gifted composers/songwriters in action.

And how could anyone live without this sublime work in their collection? M.Legrand justifiably earns the title of musical genius in the experimental sung tragi-comedy that combined his musicial originality with Jacques Demy's artistic visual brilliance. BUT if you love this, then you simply MUST find the expanded remastered version released in France in 1996. And don't forget to hunt down the comparably melodic 'Demoiselles de Rochefort', which developed Michel Legrand's notion of sung dialogue and coordinated visuals, once again in partnership with Jacques Demy. They both get better every time they're played!
Michel Legrand puts Andrew Lyod Webber To Shame ! May 15, 2000 F. Longworth (Newcastle, AUSTRALIA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Michel Legrand is an absolute genius ! I am 28 years old and have been a fan of the great maestro since I was 21. I first saw "Les Parapluies De Cherbourg" in 1996 and the film with it's wonderful imaginary use of vibrant blues, greens and yellows in collaboration with Legrand's heavenly tour de force of a score left me in tears by the end everything worked so exceptionally well. Praise must go to the actors and actresses too, Denuvre deserves full credit. Legrand was nominated for an Oscar for his work on the Umbrellas of Cherbourg but while he didn't win an award the music in the film says it all: Legrand WIZARD ! Legrand SENTIMENTALIST ! Legrand: PERFECTIONIST Legrand: WE LOVE YOU ! :) How can people like Andrew Llyod Webber, puccini plagarist, copycat, with music so weakly composed, when there are musicians out there like Sondheim, Herrman, Legrand and Schwartz just to name a few. .... The final verdict dear people is don't go and buy Whistle Down The Wind, or The Phantom Of The Opera, or Cats - go buy yourself a real treat and purchase this album as it is supremely wonderful. Thank you Michel Legrand for leaving us with this legacy :)
