started off so great November 21, 2005 Paul Friesen (Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
THe first three songs of this album rock so hard, after the failure of digimortal, I thought "thank god" Unfortunately, everything is downhill from there (with the exception of the Nirvana School cover) Many of the songs start off ripping i.e drones, corporate cloning, but soon turn to crud. If you want real Fear Factory action, check out their first four albums: Concrete, Soul of a New Machine, Demanufacture, and Obsolete, all available here on Amazon.
good album March 20, 2005 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
crazy album. but the best songs are on the first half. but its still a great album. heres the lowdown:slave labor...5/5...hard song that kicks off this album really good cyberwaste...5/5...heaviest song on the album. what can i say? its awesome. act of god...4/5...kind of a step down from the first two drones...5/5...stepped back up after the third track. this ones got cool double bass drumming. archetype...5/5...another kickass double bass drumming beat in this one. sweet song too. corporate cloning...5/5...very true lyrics and very good song. bite the hand that bleeds...5/5...slower, but still very good. undercurrent...4/5...this is where the album declines a little bit. but its still very good songs. default judgement...4/5...this one doesnt live up to the rest of the album. bonescraper...4/5...this songs pretty heavy, but its got kind of a happy sounding riff as the intro and chorus, so its kind of an anomoly. human shields...3/5...this one doesnt grow on you at all after disliking it for so long. ascension...2/5...more of an 'i have a headache i want quiet noises to sooth me' kind of song. kind of boring. school...1/5...never was a big nirvana fan, and even ff cant save this stupid and immature tune. (and i know someone will eventually hit a 'no' underneath this saying my review wasnt helpful because i just dissed nirvana...the "best and most creative band of all time.") ok, so with two stupid songs, 1 seven minute track of calm noises, 3 good songs, 7 awesome songs...its hard to argue with archetype. its fast, its heavy, it can be slow, and its truthful and real (besides the last track). i like that. this would be a good next pick as a cd purchase, definately. lets just leave it at this: yes i said this album displays some sub-par songs, but the rest of the album makes up for them.
With some minor exceptions, a great album November 24, 2004 Whenever I first hear of a band, I get their newest album first, and then work from their first on. I don't know why, that's just the way I do things, and it usually works out well. In the case of Fear Factory and Archetype, I was buying a questionable album, since the band had recently undergone some changes. I was not disappointed, however: "Slave Labour" 10/10 One of the best tracks, a terrific opener. "Cyberwaste" 9/10 Probably the heaviest track on the album, the first few seconds alone will send metallic shivers down your spine. "Act of God" 7.5/10 A good song, not quite as good as the first two, but still good nonetheless. "Drones" 8.5/10 Still not matching Slave Labour, but an excellent track. "Archetype" 10/10 The title track, in my opinion the best on the album. "Corporate Cloning" 9/10 With a catchy but not annoying beat, this one shows off Burton's vocals in an interesting way. "Bite The Hand That Bleeds" 10/10 Another amazing track, the most melodic on the album. "Undercurrent" 9/10 Disliked it at first, but it definitely grew on me. Great track. "Default Judgement" 9/10 Great, what more can I say? "Bonescraper" 6.5/10 A nice heavy track, but just not on par with the rest of the album. "Human Shields" 7/10 OK, but nothing too special. "Acension" 2/10 This lyric-less track wouldve been OK at 2 minutes or so, but as it is the longest track(7 minutes), it drags the album down. "School" 7/10 I figured at first listen that this wasnt a FF song. Not bad, but I'd say it's thankful this Nirvana cover is short.
I SOLD MY SOUL!!! September 21, 2004 Trauma (Gotham City) I remember watching FF gain momentum way back when and I allways thought that they would make a pivotal album someday. Archetype is it for me it just takes off and never lands or loses speed or hits any bumps along the way. When I heard that they had broken up I was glad cause one more cd with 9 minute songs about robots and I swear I was going to jump out of a window or eat the cd or both. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. So when the news spread that they were reforming without Dino Cazares,Rhys Fulber or RoadRunner Records I was mortified and stricken with images of Fear Factory playing those 9 minute songs live with nothing more than an old IBM and a 3rd rate casio keyboard!!!! So as soon as the cd was released I ran and bought myself a copy cause I love train wrecks in every shape and size and I didnt want to be influenced at all good or bad by other people and their criticism of it. I kept waiting for it to lapse into some absurd theme but it never did Archetype ended I was floored, impressed and in awe. I love this cd and every single song on it!!!!! Including the cover of Nirvanas School. I hope everything that follows is this punishing and determined sounding from FF this is a brand new start from one of the best metal bands on the planet and Archetype raises the bar high and is a landmark piece for this genre as much as Soul of a New Macine and De manufacture were so many years ago. If you buy this look for the good copy with the dvd included,it really does give some insight into how they came apart and its got the vid for Cyberwaste. Cant beat that!!!
In Fear Factory We Trust..... opps... na, im right!!! July 19, 2004 Mach*21 (Indiana) First id like to say thank god ther back.... any fan of FF was heart strucken when we learned that the band was breaking up. That is definitly in the past now. Yes, It is true that they go thru band members like water since ther debuted... But who gives a rats rearend, ther a great band from start to finish. And they continue to put out great albums and shows. So who cares what they have to do to get the job done. As long as Bell is thrashing the mic ill be listenin. Hell when i got arrest for going 130 in a 55 in my Mustang i was listening to Archetype, for some reason it makes my foot push on the gas peddle harder....:) Archetype by far right up ther with ther best albums if not the best yet to date. Great Job Guys...
