5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack filled with Fantastic Talent!   November 26, 2007
music_note23 (Canada)
I picked up this CD shortly after its release, and it's been a constant in my CD player ever since. I'm a fan of the Broadway show, so I was a little unsure of how I'd feel about this, but I was pleasantly surprised. There's a lot of wonderful talent singing their hearts out for this soundtrack, and some nice little surprises thrown in. br / br /Individual song reviews: br / br /Good Morning, Baltimore: A wonderful way to open the CD and introduce the world to Nikki Blonsky's larger-than-life voice. This song is a lot of fun, with a great beat, and wonderful vocals - 9/10 br / br /Nicest Kids In Town - Probably one of the bigger surprises here, since I had no idea James Marsden (aka Cyclops from X-Men) could sing this well. He has a rich tone and introduces us to the "Corny Council" with style and flair. 8/10 br / br /It Takes Two - One of my favourites, mainly because I love the old crooner sound from the 60's. Zac Efron shows a vocal maturity beyond his years, and it's a shame that this song was cut from the movie. 10/10 br / br /(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs - Michelle Pfieffer is delightfully wicked and superficial on this track, making it more about attitude than actual vocal performance, but she pulls through on that end, too. Her voice is thin at times here, but it suits the character and makes for a fun song. 7/10 br / br /I Can Hear The Bells - Blonsky's powerhouse voice shines here again with this wistful song of longing for that perfect boy. The melody is beautiful and will have everyone singing along. 9/10 br / br /Ladies' Choice - Another Efron song, written specifically for him. A lot of fun, great to dance to. Almost a big-band sound. 10/10 br / br /The New Girl In Town - Great ensemble song that makes use of a great beat, great tune, and wonderful voices. 9/10 br / br /Welcome To The 60's - John Travolta's first chance to shine on this soundtrack. Another wonderful beat, with a bigger sound and lots of large voices. Excellent! 9/10 br / br /Run and Tell That - Easily the show-stopper of the whole CD! This song has such a flavor to it, so much attitude, and is a real powerhouse for Elijah Kelly. There's a lot of soul here. I can't sit still when this song plays! 10/10 br / br /Big, Blonde, and Beautiful - Queen Latifah has such a strong voice, and this song has such a great message, combined with a melody that's catchy and beats the will get you moving! 9/10 br / br /Big, Blonde, and Beautiful (Reprise) - Another Travolta number, with Pfieffer in there, too. Quirky and cute, but not a major player on this soundtrack. 7/10 br / br /(You're) Timeless To Me - Christopher Walken is another pleasant surprise here. He's not exactly a big voice, but he plays opposite Travolta nicely and gives the song that touch of "cute" that it needs to make the listener forget that Travolta is playing a woman. 7/10 br / br /I Know Where I've Been - A slow, soulful song with a great message, brought across beautifully by Queen Latifah's amazing voice. I get chills and tears in my eyes when I listen to this one! 9/10 br / br /Without Love - Another favourite. Efron, Kelly, Blonsky, and Amanda Bynes do a really good job with this upbeat song about the necessity of love. Some nice harmonies here, too. 9/10 br / br /(It's) Hairspray - A forgettable song, but another one where Marsden shows his "chops." Nice beat, but not fantastic. 7/10 br / br /You Can't Stop The Beat - Easily the best track on the CD, hands down. This song drives home its message while using all of the talent available in the cast, with some great chorus parts at the end. Phenomenal! 10/10 br / br /Come So Far (Got So Far To Go) - Another great ensemble song, played over the end credits of the movie. Easy to listen to, fun beat, great voices. 8/10 br / br /Cooties - My least favourite song. Brittany Snow's voice is thin and heavily produced here, and the song itself is just silly. 5/10 br / br /Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now - Another casualty from the movie itself, save over the very last part of the end credits. This song pairs the 3 Tracy's, Ricki Lake (1988 movie), Marissa Jaret Winokur (Original Broadway), and Blonsky to make a fun song with lots of attitude. The ending of "Go Ricki, Go Ricki" is quite funny, too. 9/10 br / br /All-in-all, anyone who likes fun music with a good message behind it will love this CD! br / br / br / br / br / br / br /
