Taking Chances is not without its daring moments--we'll get to those--but the first order of business in any review of this much-hyped record, on which Celine Dion is said to have slunk away from her songbird instincts in favor of embracing her inner rock & roll wild child, should be fan reassurance. Therefore: fear not. Taking Chances has its share of poignant, pretty ballads (both "A Song for You" and "Right Next to the Right One" are goosebump-raisers) and love songs (the hopeful, heartfelt title track, which unfolds into an anthemic power ballad midway through, may be the best one). As far as standard Celine fare goes, in fact, Chances is likely her strongest non-French outing since 2002's A New Day Has Come; nobody unfolds a lyric with more care or nuance. And, as the subtle "My Love" deftly proves, any early-career instincts to over-sing have gone poof along with her '90s-era, sweet-natured-kook persona. Because it's a generous 16 songs long, it may even be possible to ignore the non-Celine-like moments on Taking Chances and just enjoy the more fan-faithful tracks. But that wouldn't be any fun, would it? There are songs here--"Can't Fight the Feelin'," "Fade Away," "That's Just the Woman In Me"--that will astound diehards and make fans of those who've dissed her for more than a decade. I've listened to my wife's copy, and after listening to this pile of whatever you want to call it, all I can say is ugh! First of all, it pretty much sounds like any other Celine Dion CD, and even they all pretty much sound like each other. And "Taking Chances"? Talk about playing it safe! Her version of "Alone" sounds like she swiped the backing track and sang karaoke to it! Why bother doing a cover tune when it sounds so much like the original? Maybe it's just me, but I don't get it. The backing music on this CD, as on the rest of her CDs, is so generic that it could've been made by anyone - it has absolutely no personality. Her music has no identifiable sound whatsoever! Great singing is not only about hitting notes that most people only dream of hitting, it's about sincere, honest singing, not over-singing everything and saying, "Hey, look what my voice can do." Take Rod Stewart, for example. Not necessarily my favourite singer, and he doesn't have a pretty voice from a technical standpoint, but he sings with acres more honesty than Celine Dion - that's what makes him a better singer. You could swing a dead cat and hit someone who's a lesser singer from a technical viewpoint, but also has far more sincerity in their singing than her. Don't bother.

Celine Dion won the Eurovision-price for Switzerland. So for that she's untouchable here. But I must say that I'd like to see her doing other more personal things than this mega-biz-sold-out. I'm just sorry for her voice.
A strong and surprising album January 3, 2008

The title of this album suggests that Celine might be throwing it all away and exploring new avenues on her new album, and for the most part it lives up to this assumption. "Taking Chances" is easily her best english album in ages, superbly produced and flawlessly performed. The title song (and first single) is a good indication of what you will find on this wonderful album : romantic songs written around catchy melodies, delivered over rocking arrangements. One listen to "My love", "Shadow of love", "Fade away", "This time" and "Surprise, surprise" is enough to demonstrate my point. Tracks like "New dawn" or "That's just the woman in me" also feature amazing vocal performances from Celine at her most powerful, using a bluesy tone and delivery that one might not have expected. And "Eyes on me", a middle-east influenced dance song, is a definite showstopper that proves how versatile a vocalist Celine truly is. And while she has indeed taken chances with this new album, fans of Celine will not exactly find themselves in alien territories; There are lovely ballads, such as "Right next to the right one", "Skies of L.A." and "I have nothing left", and they work very well for her. As for "A song for you", it is easily one of her best vocal performances, mostly because it is so obviously heartfelt and sincere.
This said, some of her attempts at pushing her voice in a rock area don't work for the best. Try as she might, her cover of Heart's "Alone" is simply adequate and fails to capture the original's palpable desparation - her voice soars and she hits all the right notes, but the performance itself and the production are way too clean to make it truly convincing. "Can't fight the feeling" sounds like the parody of a rock song, rather than a real one - it's like a tiger without claws or teeth. And even though I quite like it, those who accuse Celine of "oversinging" will have a field day with "That's just the woman in me".
Still, it's hard to blame an established artist for attempting to explore new ground - and to be honest, most of those attempts work very well on this album. "Taking chances" will possibly not attract new fans, but is interesting and different enough to keep Celine's legion of fans wanting more. It's a wise move at this point in her career, and let's hope it gets the recognition it deserves.

That's all I have to say. While others are worried about doing other cd's and even comebacks, especially one whom I consider the best female artist of all time, Whitney, this woman Celine has been doing the whole Las Vegas thing and puttin out a CD THE ENTIRE TIME. A Phenomenal One. Wow
She soars to new heights with her high end vocals but on the other end, reaching down into her abdomen for some of her deep ones and finding some rock roots, pretty much a first for her.

Taking Chances has now taken the top spot as my absolute, most favorite Celine Dion CD. The new sound is fresh and vibrant and there is not one track on this album that I don't like. This CD is a shining example of why she is the best selling female artist in history...The best voice in the world and worth every single penny. It is a true testament to her legend status that she can continually produce such quality music.
