4 out of 5 stars Subtle Differences...Worth the price?   November 8, 2009
John G. Hunter (Ontario, CANADA)
I have the entire Beatles cd collection released in the 1980s. The reason I purchased the Mono Box was some of the original cd releases were mono but everything after a Hard Days Night was done in simulated stereo so I wanted to get the original 11 albums that were done in mono and hopefully they would be of noticeably better sound quality. I am pleased I now have all the original mono releases up to and including the white album and the one cd of "past masters" not originally released on albums. However, I do not recommend this collection to casual Beatle listeners. Unless you are going to sit and isten to these songs with either headphones or alone in a quiet environment the original cds from the 1980s are probably sufficient for you. The cost of these boxes is such that people who expect to be blown away by them are in for a reality check and probably over time will be disappointed they spent all that money for subtle differences and slightly brighter sound.

4 out of 5 stars Beatles For Sale   November 8, 2009
guy berthiaume (Embrun, Ontario Canada)
I don't know how many times I have bought the Beatles catalogue. Initially, then again when I got a better turntable, since the originals were all worn out! Then I bought some Japanese pressings, then the initial CD releases, then the Stereo Box set, and now, the Mono Set! br /The Mono set does sound better on MOST of the albums, in comparison to the Stereo set. I think the early stuff gets the most improvement. As we get to Revolver and Sgt. Pepper, I think it's a question of different, not better. There is no right or wrong opinion. br /As for the Mono set being better for 'pub owners', a 'mono' switch on their amps usually does the job for them! It's rare that pubs with multiple speaker set ups play their canned music in stereo! It's usually always in mono! br /If you have the money, buy this set. Then save up your money for another Beatle assault in 2012, when the 50th anniversary of their hitting the market hits! It's going to be huge. It is in the works already, count on it!

3 out of 5 stars Not a "true replica"   October 10, 2009

Only 3/5 because of the packaging let-down, not the sound. br / br /Just got the set a few days ago - there are some great reviews re: the sound of the Mono and Stereo sets, so I will not review them here. I have had some people working at HMV tell me that there are no differences in sound and that it's just a matter of personal preference - don't listen to these fools, there are indeed some pretty significant differences on a few of these records. To learn more, just check out the reviews on amazon.ca and amazon.com. br / br /I'd like to review the packaging - as you know, the packaging for the Mono set is quite different from the packaging of the Stereo set. The Stereo verions of the albums come in fold-out paper digipaks with a little booklet insert and the CD tucked into a sleeve. Obviously quite an improvement - however, I still expected more. They have this cheap "done quickly without much thought" quality to them, and this was a big reasons why I opted for the Mono versions. If anyone has the T.Rex Electric Warrior remastered CD package, the Stereo Beatles remasters pale in comparison to it. br / br /Other than that, the set is beautiful and I'd recommend this set over the Stereo set any day if you are a true Beatles fan. br /The Mono set on the other-hand, are done as mini-vinyl replicas - however, the only thing replicated is the packaging. The CDs still look like CDs - if anyone has the Wu-Tang Clan 36 Chambers 30th Anniversary Ed, you'll know that IS an ACTUAL mini-vinyl replica, complete with grooves and all on the non-read side of the CD. This is what I expected from the Mono set, for $260, for all the hype and now all the waiting due to it's limited production, I expected something big from something that was made such a big deal. br / br /Other than that, the set is quite beautiful and I'd recommend this one over the Stereo set any day if you are a true Beatles fan.

I THOROUGHLY CAN RECOMMEND THE MONO VERSION, THE SOUND WAS AS I REMEMBERED AND ONE COULD HEAR THE OFF STAGE REMARKS. I THOUGHT IT TO BE A GREAT RECORD MUCH BETTER THAN THE DIGITAL VERSIONS NOT AS PROFESSIONAL BUT MORE REAL!!! br / br /

3 out of 5 stars The Beatles Mono Box Set   September 27, 2009

I have bought The Beatles Mono Box Set and it dosen't state that br /it's a limited Edition! Also, I know there were only 10,000 to be br /made! Apparently, they weren't expecting to sell so many Mono Box Sets! br /So, they aren't going to label them as a Limited Edition and only 10,000 br /available because the US apparently will have 10,000 also? So, I don't know br /if anyone else has looked at the back of their box set or inside and saw it say, br /"LIMITED EDITION" or #.. of 10,000? I also heard that the stores will soon br /be getting more Mono Box sets in soon? So, I don't know how true this br /is because the Beatles Mono set was to be a limited Editon?
